AZUSA, Calif. – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's track and field team competed in three events here this weekend at the Azusa Pacific Franson Last Chance Meet held here at Cougar Stadium.
This weekend's meet was the last chance for the ThunderWolves to record NCAA provisional marks and earn a spot into the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which is set to held at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl on May 25-27. The NCAA will also the qualifiers for this year's outdoor national championships online at
www.NCAA.com on Tuesday, May 16.
While the Pack men competed at ASU's Franson Last Chance Meet, the Pack women will send several throwers to compete on Sunday at the Mines Last Chance Meet hosted by Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.
At the Azusa Pacific Franson Last Chance Meet, the Pack men had two competitors in the 400-meter dash as junior
Tyrell Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) was 12th with a time of 48.39, while senior
Carl Schmidt (Wiesbaden, Germany/Elly-Heuss School) was 19th with a time of 48.88.
In the 1,500-meter run, fifth-year senior
Matisse Virey (Lyon, France) was 16th with a time of 3:49.75.
Schmidt competed in the long jump, but he fouled on three of his attempts and did record a jump.
The final Pack student-athlete that competed was junior
Terrel Johnson (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) in the decathlon. In the two-day decathlon, Johnson scored 6,188 points to finish in eighth place.
CSU Pueblo is expected to have at least 10 student-athletes qualify for the outdoor national championships as two Pack men – sophomore
Reece Sharman-Newell (Hampshire, England) and senior
Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Helena Capital) – are ranked in the Top 3 in Division II in the 800-meter dash and shot put respectively.
In addition to Sharman-Newell and Jenks, senior
Nate Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Widefield) is seventh in Division II in the shot put, while Johnson is 17th in the decathlon and junior
Kaleb Tipton (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) is ranked 14th nationally in the 800-meter run.
On the women's side, the Pack are expected to get at least six qualifiers into the outdoor national championships as sophomore
Helen Braybrook (Frieston, United Kingdom/Oakham School) is ranked second nationally in the 800-meters and sixth nationally in the 1,500-meters, while sophomore
Margot Thomas-Gatel (Chapet, Ile-de-France, France/Notre Dame Les Oiseaux) is ranked 17th in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and sophomore
Mikayla Jones (Aurora, Colo./Vista Peak Prep) is 11th in the high jump. In the shot put, sophomore
Katherine Higgins (Mead, Colo./Ponderosa) and freshman
Febe Wessels (Pretoria, South Africa) are fifth and 17th nationally, while Higgins is 21st in the discus.
