KEARNEY, Neb. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's swimming team tallied 493.5 points here Friday evening to hold the lead over four teams following the first day of the University of Nebraska Kearney Invitational held at the Kearney High School pool.
The ThunderWolves lead by two points over UNK, who is second with 491.5 points, while Midland University sits in third place with 227 points and Adams State is in fourth with 219 points. The teams will conclude the UNK Invitational with nine events on Saturday.
On the first day of the event, CSU Pueblo won eight of the 10 events held on Friday, including winning both relay events and having five of the seven individual events winning being different ThunderWolves. Junior
Paola C Wu (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/University of Indianapolis) won four events, including two individual events and sophomore
Carla Sanchez Guareno ((Banyeres del Penedes, Spain/Institut de L'Arboc) won three events, including one individual event.
The Pack opened Friday's meet by taking home first place in the 400 freestyle relay with the 'A' relay team swimming a time of 4:08.46. The 'B' team was fourth with a time of 4:16.68 and the 'C' team was seventh with a time of 4:29.73.
Competing on the 'A' relay team was C WU, Sanchez Guareno, freshman
Olivia Dannhaus (Sheridan, Wyo./Sheridan), and sophomore
Aleksandra Dutkowiak (Wroclaw, Poland/SMS Wroclaw).
Meanwhile the members of the 'B' relay team were freshman
Margaret Laborde Lagrave (Sacramento, Calif./Saint Francis), freshman
Ashlee Urroz (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe CC), junior
Andrea Gallardo Perez (Merida, Mexico/Iowa Central CC) and freshman
McKenna Schilling (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) and the members of the 'C' relay team were freshman
Abigail Boyle (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park), freshman
Laci Denn (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Mainland Regional), junior
Nalani Wess (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) and junior
Markina Evdokimoff (Joshua Tree, Calif./Yucca Valley).
In the next event, the 1,000 freestyle, Perez and Evdokimoff finished first and second with times of 11:36.40 and 12:05.79.
Urroz captured first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.99. In addition to Urroz, Dutkowiak was eighth with a time of 26.52 and Lagrave was 11th with a time of 27.18. Schilling was 16th with a time of 27.75 and Wess was 20th with a time of 28.88.
The Pack went first through fourth in the 200 IM as C Wu took home first place with a time of 2:15.42, while Denn was second with a time of 2:15.46, Guareno was third with a time of 2:15.54 and Dannhaus was fourth with a time of 2:17.80.
C Wu, Gallardo Perez and Wess went first, second and fifth in the 200 butterfly with times of 2:12.23, 2:18.20 and 2:30.20 respectively.
In the 100 freestyle, Denn recorded a second place finish with a time of 56.12. In addition to Denn, Dutkowiak was seventh with a time of 58.25 and Evdokimoff was 13th with a time of 1:01.79.
The Pack recorded first, fifth, seventh and eighth place finishes in the 100 backstroke as Sanchez Guareno hit the wall first with a time of 1:01.82, while Lagrave was fifth with a time of 1:05.15, Schilling was seventh with a time of 1:06.63 and Boyle placed seventh with a time of 1:07.99.
Dannhaus would then tie for first in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:10.20.
In the final event of the first night of action, the Pack took home first, fourth and seventh in the 400 freestyle relay. The 'A' relay team posted a time of 3:45.35 as the members of the team were Dutkowiak, Sanchez Guareno, Denn and C Wu. Meanwhile, the 'B' relay team of Schilling, Evdokimoff, Lagrave and Dannhaus was fourth with a time of 3:56.16 and the 'C' relay team of Gallardo Perez, Wess, Urroz and Boyle was seventh with a time of 4:02.16.
