ThunderWolves stump UNK in 8-1 win

Box Score

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 17, 2016) Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball belted 14 hits and shut down University of Nebraska-Kearney in an 8-1 win. Seniors Francis Griffin (Oakland, Calif.) and Dominick Bregar (Pueblo, Colo.) drove in seven of the Pack's eight runs to help CSU-Pueblo improve to 4-3 on the season.

Griffin went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Bregar batted 3-for-4 on the day. He also drew a walk and plated three runs as the Pack won back-to-back games for the first time in 2016.

After the leading the Pack in a 3-0 shutout win over Adams State University last Friday, Brandon Conlin (Norco, Calif.)delivered another quality start. Conlin tossed five innings, allowing three hits and an unearned run. He punched out two batters and did not issue a walk as he improved to 2-1 this season. Conlin has not allowed an earned run in his last 11.1 innings pitched.

The Lopers got on the board first. In the second inning, Anthony Pacheco led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Pacheco scored on a single by Kyle Honeycutt to put UNK up 1-0.

With nobody out in the second and a runner in scoring position, Conlin fought back by retiring the next three batters and ending the Lopers greatest threat of the day.

CSU-Pueblo seized control in the bottom of the third. Bregar bashed a double. Taylor Snyder (Jr., Elk Ridge, Utah) and Brandon Castaneda (Sr., Azusa, Calif.) both walked to load the bases. Griffin stepped in and smacked a double that plated his three teammates and gave the Pack a 3-1 lead they would never relinquish.

The Pack added to their lead in the fourth. Jordyn Compehos (Jr., Las Vegas Nev.) reached on an error to start the frame. Fellow Las Vegas native Jordan Godman singled and both he and Compehos would move into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Bregar swatted a two-run single to build the Pack's lead to 5-0.

CSU-Pueblo was not done in the fourth. Snyder singled. Castaneda brought in Bregar with another one-bagger. Then, Griffin clubbed the Pack's third consecutive single to drive in Snyder and make it a 7-1 Pack lead after four.

In the bottom of the seventh, The ThunderWolves tacked on a little insurance. Godman singled and stole second. He scored on a Bregar base-knock. Bregar's third RBI of the day made it 8-1 heading into the eighth.

The Pack bullpen kept the Lopers in check. CSU-Pueblo relievers allowed just two hits and two walks in four innings of work, striking out three.

Josh Nuernberg (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) entered in the ninth inning to try and close out UNK. He allowed just one base runner as he recorded the final three outs and clinched the Pack's fourth victory of the season.

Godman finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Snyder reached base in each of his four plate appearances with two hits and a pair of walks. Castaneda went 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.

Bregar now owns a .533 (8-for-15) batting average over his last four games. His offensive explosion has helped the Pack move .500 for the first time this season.

The Pack will enjoy their final free weekend of the season before they host Lubbock Christian in a four-game series Feb. 26-28 at Rawlings Field.  Game on this series against the Chapparels begins Friday Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.
