PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - March 2, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo swept a doubleheader against Metro State Saturday, eking out a strange 9-7 win before rolling to a 4-0 shutout in the nightcap.
CSU-Pueblo bats were active in the first game, helping the Pack to overcome a cavalcade of errors in the field that nearly sunk the game. The ThunderWolves committed five errors, resulting in seven Roadrunner runs - six of which were unearned - as the Pack saw a 5-1 lead disintegrate in the fifth inning as Metro State put up a five to take a 6-5 lead.
The ThunderWolves responded in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out rally, using a walk and a Metro State error to set up a long bomb over the leftfield fence by Wade Beauvais (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) to put the Pack ahead for good 8-6 en route to the 9-7 win. Kyle Ginter (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif.) pitched the final 2-1/3 innings, giving up just three hits and striking out four.
In the second game, it was all about starting pitcher Lonny Schoon (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.). The Pack junior turned in a complete game masterpiece, allowing just two hits in a 4-0 shutout, striking out four.
While Schoon powered through the Metro State lineup, the ThunderWolves ripped Metro State for nine hits, headlined by a solo home run from current RMAC home run leader, Mario Sanchez (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.), who went yard in the second inning.
With the victory, CSU-Pueblo improves to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Pack will close out its four-gamer Sunday with a noon standoff with the Roadrunners.
