ThunderWolves fall just short of doubleheader sweep.
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Apr. 2, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo claimed a much-needed win over the current RMAC leader, nationally-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, Saturday, but couldn't claim a doubleheader sweep, winning the opener 13-11 before falling 14-10 in the late game.
Both teams combined for 28 and 29 hits in the two games, respectively, and the entire doubleheader was typified by lead changes and big innings by both teams.
In the first game, the Lopers jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the third inning, but the Pack cut the lead to 8-4 after plating three runs in the bottom of the third, then taking the lead after a six-run fourth inning.
In the fourth, the ThunderWolves torched the RMAC's ERA leader, Kearney pitcher Roy Metter, by hitting safely six times and drawing two walks. The highlight came when Chase Lacomb (So., Las Vegas, Nev.) knocked in three runs on a double, one of three doubles in the inning.
The Pack added another three runs in the fifth inning, sprinting to a 13-8 lead, again on a series of doubles and singles. Once it was all said and done, CSU-Pueblo recorded six doubles as a team, scoring all 13 runs without a home run.
In the second game, the ThunderWolves were looking to follow the same script for a win, coming back from a deficit to take a lead.
Trailing 6-4, CSU-Pueblo scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, stringing together four hits in the inning. The ThunderWolves were also gifted two more runs when Kearney committed two errors on a single, as Jason Veyna (Sr., Lamar, Colo.) turned a stolen base into two runs when a bad throw by catcher Felix Segovia and a bobble in centerfield by Jason Trulin allowed both Veyna to score all the way from first and Jye Lanphere (Sr., Spokane, Wash.) to score from third, giving the Pack a 9-6 lead.
But it was all undone when Kearney hung seven runs on the ThunderWolves in the sixth inning, logging seven hits - six of them singles - in breaking the game open and escaping a second straight upset by the ThunderWolves.
CSU-Pueblo will try to turn the series into a four-game split Sunday when it hosts the Lopers at noon Sunday.
