COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis concluded its first weekend of action here Sunday at the Colorado College Invitational held at Memorial Park.
The second day of the two-day season-opening event was delayed throughout the day due to weather and was eventually canceled before the doubles matches could be played.
At the event, the ThunderWolves had seven players competing overall. In Flight 'A' singles, the Pack had three players competing – freshman
Fernanda Martinez (Queretaro, Mexico/International School of Queretaro), senior
Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College), and freshman
Ainoha Salo (Barcelona, Spain/Escola Lleo XIII).
Meanwhile, in Flight 'B' singles, four Pack players competed – sophomore
MaKayla Martinez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County), senior
Bella Hernandez (Rocklin, Calif./MSU Denver), senior
Laney Reddick (Sacramento, Calif./MSU Denver), and junior
Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate).
Six of those seven players, except McKayla Martinez, also played in the Doubles 'A' flight.
In Sunday's singles action, the Pack had four of its players facing each other in the consolations of both the 'A' and 'B' flights.
In an 'A' singles flight consolation semifinal, Aebischer faced Salo, and Aebischer would come away with the win as she won the match, 6-2, 6-3. The other consolation semifinal was scheduled to feature
Fernanda Martinez, but the weather cancelled that match.
Meanwhile, in the 'B' singles flight consolation final, Reddick would earn a win over Travica, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
In addition,
MaKayla Martinez and Hernandez played in the 'B' singles consolation semifinal as Martinez picked up a win over Colorado Mesa's Nadia Alden, 6-4, 6-1, while Hernandez collected a three-set win over Western New Mexico's Xaviera Melgar, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0. Martinez and Hernandez were scheduled to meet in a consolation final, but that match was also cancelled due to the weather.
Meanwhile, in the back draw of doubles, the Pack's three teams were scheduled to play round two matches on Sunday morning, but the weather forced tournament officials to cancel all the doubles matches on Sunday.
The doubles teams scheduled to compete were Aebischer and
Fernanda Martinez against CC's tandem of Aspen Young and Lucia Moravek, while Reddick and Hernandez were scheduled to face CC's Allyson Lowe and Avery Hickman, and Travica and Salo were scheduled to face CC's Lindsey Popeo and Meredith Waters.
With the first weekend of action complete, the Pack will open its dual meet schedule next weekend with three home matches at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Center. The Pack will open the weekend with an 11 a.m. match on Friday, Sept. 12, against Colorado Mesa, before hosting Fort Hays State on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8:30 a.m. and Colorado College on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m.
