Travica Wins at No. 4 Singles in Friday's Women's Tennis Setback at Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team continued its spring season here Friday afternoon with a 6-1 loss to Fort Hays State at the FHSU Tennis Courts.

CSU Pueblo fell to 1-11 overall on the season, while Fort Hays State improved to 6-2 overall on the year.

The ThunderWolves battled throughout the match nearly came away with double points after a strong showing by their No. 1 doubles team of senior Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) and freshman Fernanda Martinez (Queretaro, Mexico/International School of Queretaro) as they earned a 6-2 win over Bethan Gill and Diana Souza.

Fort Hays State, though, claimed victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to secure the point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. Seniors Bella Hernandez (Rocklin, Calif./MSU Denver) and Lacey Reddick (Sacramento, Calif./MSU Denver) fell 6-4 at No. 2, and junior Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate) and sophomore MaKayla Martinez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) also fell 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.

Meanwhile, in singles action, Travica delivered the Pack's lone point of the match with a gritty three-set win at No. 4 singles. Travica, who has now won two of her last three singles matches and has won a team-best three singles matches on the year, outlasted FHSU's Janae Montoya 7-6, 3-6, 7-6.

In addition to Travica's match at No. 4 singles, Martinez also played a three-set match at No. 2 singles as she fell 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to Molly Gaddis, while Aebischer fell by identical 6-4 scores in two sets at No. 1 singles to Gill.
Hernandez suffered a straight-set (6-3, 6-1) loss at No. 3 singles to Ines Latorre, while Reddick fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to Ines Steeman.

MaKayla Martinez suffered a 6-2, 6-1 setback at No. 6 singles to Angeliki Efthymiou.

The Pack returns to action on Saturday, March 14, with a 12 p.m. MT exhibition match in Great Bend, Kan., against Barton County Community College.
