Bryson Torrie (Denver, Colo./Vista Peak) and junior kicker
Jackson Smith (Centennial, Colo./Santa Barbara City College) were named this week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Football Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league office.
It is the second Player of the Week honors for both Torrie and Smith and the fourth time this season the Pack has had a Player of the Week honoree by the league. Torrie earns this week's Defensive Player of the Week accolade after scoring his third defensive touchdown of the season in the Pack's 40-14 road win this past Saturday at Black Hills State. Torrie's 49-yard pick six with 35 seconds left in the first quarter put the Pack ahead 17-0. It was his second interception return for a touchdown this season and CSU Pueblo's fourth defensive touchdown of the season. Torrie also recorded four tackles, including three solo stops in the win over the Yellow Jackets.
On the season, Torrie is second on the team in tackles with 48 and has had 25 solo stops and has added two tackles for a loss, one sack, picked off three passes, forced and recovered a fumble. Torrie's three defensive touchdowns are the most this season by a Division II player and he has returned two interceptions for scores and also returned a fumble for a score. As a team, the Pack is tied for Division II lead with Central Washington and Benedict in defensive touchdowns with four and his tied for second in the RMAC in interceptions per game (0.38).
Meanwhile, Smith earns this week's Special Teams Player of the Week accolades after becoming the sixth player in Division II this season to make four field goals in a game and scored a single-game school record 16 points in help the then ninth-ranked ThunderWolves to a 40-14 win this past Saturday at Black Hills State. In the win against the Yellow Jackets, Smith opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal in the first quarter. He then added a 31-yarder to close the first half scoring, before tacking on a 43-yard field goal late in the third quarter and a 38-yarder midway through the fourth quarter. He is the first RMAC kicker to make four field goals in a game since Black Hills State's Coleman Chapman in 2023. Smith was also a perfect 4-for-4 on his extra points in the win over the Yellow Jackets. The four field goals tied a single-game school record held by Greg O'Donnell, who made four field goals against Midwestern State in 2015 and Greg Taylor, who made four field goals against Colorado Mesa in 2016. The 16 points bettered the old school record of 13 set by
Jacob Willig against Midwestern State in 2013.
On the season, Smith, who has only played in six games, leads the RMAC in field goal percentage as he has made 91.7 percent of his field goals (11-for-12) and is fourth in the RMAC in scoring with 65 points, and his 10.8 points per game average is second-best in the RMAC. His 11 made field goals are tied for the most in the league, while is 32 extra points is also second-most in the RMAC. In addition, his school-record 60-yard field goal against New Mexico Highlands is the longest this season in Division II as the previous longest field goal was 56 yards.
In addition to Torrie and Smith, the league named Colorado School of Mines redshirt sophomore quarterback Joseph Capra as the Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Orediggers to touchdowns on its first six first-half drives before sitting out the remainder of the game in Mines' 72-14 home win against Adams State. For the game against Mines, Capra was 14-for-18 passing for 226 yards and six touchdowns and added 67 yards rushing on four carries. It was the first six-touchdown passing game in the RMAC and was the second-most touchdowns thrown in a Division II game this season.
Torrie, Smith and the No. 7 ThunderWolves (7-1 overall, 6-0 RMAC) will have a bye this weekend before returning to the football field on Saturday, Nov. 1 with a 1 p.m. showdown in Gunnison, Colo., against sixth-ranked Western Colorado. The Pack has won 22 straight RMAC games dating to the 2023 season, which is currently the longest active conference win streak in Division II football and they have also won 13 straight road games dating to the 2023 season and that is also the longest active road win streak in Division II football.
