PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball squad is set to host their home-opener, welcoming the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs into town tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
Most recently the Pack picked up a couple of victories down in Austin, Texas as CSU Pueblo swept St. Edward's in two games to open the 2024 season. The Pack sit alone as the only undefeated team left in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The two region wins last weekend against St. Edward's really propelled the Pack in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA), as CSU Pueblo jumped up from 10th in the South Central Region to fourth in the region rankings. The top six teams in the regional advance to the postseason.
The South Central Region is a combination of teams from the RMAC and the Lone Star Conference. The NCBWA is not an official NCAA poll.
The defending NCAA Division II National Champions Angelo State Rams from the LSC took home the top spot in the polls with 76 points and six first place votes, despite losing two games in their opening season against an unranked Eastern New Mexico squad.
Colorado Mesa remains as the top RMAC team in the polls, coming in at the number two spot with 71 points. The Mavericks lost two out of three games to No. 15 Rollins College down in Winter Park, Florida.
A strong West Texas A&M squad from the LSC come in at the number three spot in the polls with a 7-1 record, 67 points, and two first place votes. The Buffaloes lone loss of the season came to conference foe Texas A&M-Kingsville on Feb. 9.
CSU Pueblo comes in fourth, jumping the most spots of any team previously ranked in the NCBWA poll after initially coming in at the number 10 spot. The Pack received 45 points after sweeping St. Edward's in two games.
UT Permian Basin just barely comes in behind CSU Pueblo as the squad from Odessa, Texas comes in with 44 points and a 6-2 record.
St. Edward's comes in at number six in the polls with a 3-3 record, and 35. The Hilltoppers were previously ranked in the number four spot, but fell a couple spots after losing twice to CSU Pueblo.
Lubbock Christian holds down the number seven spot with a 5-3 record and 29 points, while UT Tyler fell from number three to number eight after starting the season off with a 4-4 record, receiving 26 points.
Arkansas Fort-Smith moves up from being not ranked to the number nine spot in the polls with a 4-0 record and 20 points, while MSU Denver rounds out the polls with a 3-4 record and 13 points.
