PUEBLO, Colo. - The Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team looks to extend their win streak to three games as the ThunderWolves hit the road in a crucial Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest with Western Colorado tomorrow at 5 p.m in Gunnison, Colo.
The Pack who have been finding their stride as of late, winning five out of their last seven games, play a single game tomorrow night, as the Pack looks to make a push into the top eight in the RMAC standings, just a half game behind Fort Lewis for eighth place in the league standings.
CSU Pueblo enters tomorrows' match-up with a 10-8 overall record and a 5-5 mark in the RMAC after a home victory against MSU Denver 73-69 last Saturday and then earned another home victory against New Mexico Highlands 84-64 on Tuesday night to conclude a three-game homestand.
This weekend's lone game will give the Pack a chance to get above .500 in conference play for the first time since Dec. 1. More importantly, it gives CSU Pueblo a chance to climb up the standings in the RMAC. The top eight make it to the conference tournament in March.
ABOUT THE PACK
The Pack enter Friday's match-up, led by redshirt junior forward
Alisha Little (Aurora, Colo.) who has been on a tear as of late. In Little's last seven games she is averaging 22.5 points per game and is pulling down 13 rebounds per game. Little leads the RMAC in scoring at 19.1 points per game, rebounds at 11.6 per game, and blocks at 3.6 per game. Little leads all of NCAA Division II women's basketball in double-doubles with 13 and leads the RMAC and Division II in total blocked shots with 64.
Redshirt junior forward
Autumn Watts (Centennial, Colo./McNeese State) has turned up her game as of late, coming off a career high in points against New Mexico Highlands in which she scored 18 and pulled down nine rebounds. Watts is averaging 9.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Junior guard
Tomia Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Florida Gulf Coast) is in full command of the offense averaging 4.1 assists per game and 2.4 steals per game. Johnson is among the conference leaders in both categories as she ranks third in assists and ninth in steals. Johnson is also coming off her third double-digit scoring game against New Mexico Highlands as she scored 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting.
As a squad, the ThunderWolves have continued to be one of the best defensive units in the RMAC and in the nation. They lead the RMAC in blocked shots at 5.4 per game and rank eighth in that category nationally. In addition, the Pack are third in the conference defensively in field goal percentage, holding their opponents to just 37 percent shooting from the field.
The Pack continue to be one of the better rebounding teams in the conference, coming in fourth at 38.4 rebounds per game. Regis leads the conference at 40.6 rebounds per game.
CSU Pueblo is coached by
Tommie Johnson, who is in his fifth season leading the Pack. In his tenure as a head coach, Johnson has put together a 58-64 overall record, and an RMAC record of 44-50. Johnson also spent 10 season as an assistant for the men's program from 2008-16.
ABOUT WESTERN COLORADO
Western Colorado comes into tomorrow's match-up looking for their first RMAC win of the season. The Mountaineers sit in 14
th place in the conference with a 2-11 overall record and have a conference record of 0-8. Western Colorado will also look to snap an eight game losing streak, coming into this match-up versus the Pack.
The Mountaineers are coming off a weekend in South Dakota as they faced South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State. On Friday, Jan 12., Western Colorado fell 73-62 despite having four players score in double figures. The Mountaineers were led offensively by junior forward Rachel Cockman as she scored 15 points on 6 of 16 shooting from the field. The following day, Western Colorado fell to Black Hills State 60-45. The Mountaineers were led by Ivey Schmidt as she tossed in 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting.
Cockman leads the Mountaineers offensively as she has a season average of 16.4 points per game. She also pulls down an average of 8.5 rebounds per game. Cockman is seventh in the conference in scoring and fifth in the rebounding category. She has scored in double-digits in every game except the Mountaineers last outing, as she was held to just four points by Black Hills State.
Joining Cockman in double-digit scoring for Western Colorado is freshman guard Jayda Maves. Maves who hails from Lakewood, Colo. is averaging 12.1 points per game and leads the team in minutes played. She recorded her career high on Dec. 1 against Adams State in which she scored 19 points on six of 13 shooting.
Western Colorado is coached by Adam Jacobson, who is in his second season with the Mountaineers. He has put together an 8-32 record in his tenure in Gunnison. Prior to Western Colorado, Jacobson put together an overall record of 44-12 at North Dakota State College of Sciences in the NJCAA.
ALL-TIME MATCHUP
Friday's game will be the only regular season match-up between the two squads. CSU Pueblo leads the all-time series, 8-5. The last time these two teams met was last January, as the Pack took home the victory 61-56 at Massari Arena.
UP NEXT FOR THE PACK
Following this Friday's game against Western Colorado, the Pack will get a week long rest before returning to action. The Pack will travel to South Dakota to take on South Dakota Mines on Friday, Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. and then travel to Black Hills State on Jan. 27 for a 4 p.m. RMAC contest.
