Women's Tennis Concludes Play Friday at ITA South Central Regional Championships

Brienza, Nunez Advance to Semifinals of 'B' Singles Bracket

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team concluded play here Friday on the second day of the ITA South Central Regional Championships hosted by Dallas Baptist University.

On Friday's second day of action, the ThunderWolves competed in both Open and 'B' Singles and the consolation semifinals of the 'B' Doubles bracket. For the day, the Pack went 2-4 as they were 1-1 each in singles and 0-1 in doubles.

Friday's action for the Pack began in the quarterfinals of the 'B' Singles bracket as junior Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of District of Columbia) collected a win over Dallas Baptist's Elise Carbo, 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 to advance to a semifinal match with Midwestern State's Sarah Mazaraki. In the semifinal, Brienza fell 7-5, 6-0 to Mazaraki as she finished the tournament with a 2-1 record in singles.

About an hour after Brienza began her 'B' Bracket quarterfinals match, freshman Mariangel Nunez (Weston, Fla./ Unidad Educativa Padre Claret) collected an impressive 6-0, 6-4 win over UT-Permian Basin's Montserrat Salazar to earn a semifinal match-up against Lubbock Christian's Oshini Herath. Herath would prevail in the semifinal match, 6-4, 6-3 to end Nunez's stay in the event as she posted a 2-1 record in singles.

In the Open Divison Consolation Singles Round of 16 bracket, junior Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) fell in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to Midwestern State's Micaela McSpadden.

Meanwhile, the other Pack match on Friday's second day of action came in the 'B' Doubles Consolation semifinals as Brienza partnered with sophomore Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) to face Lubbock Christian's duo of Gracie Wood and Maya Adler. The two team went toe-to-toe until ultimately the LCU duo that would prevail, 8-6 to advance to the finals.

The Pack will next be in action on Saturday, Sept. 30 as they close its fall schedule with a 9 a.m. match at Colorado Mesa.
