PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo head volleyball coach
Austin Albers have officially released his team's 2023 season schedule, which features seven home matches and seven matches against teams that qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2022.
Albers' 2023 ThunderWolves squad will play 26 regular season matches, including 14 matches in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. In addition, the Pack, who went 19-9 overall, was fifth in the RMAC with a 12-6 record and advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional, will play an exhibition match at NCAA Division I University of Denver on Aug. 19.
The 2023 regular season opens with four matches at the Texas A&M-Kingsville Invitational on Sept. 1-2. The Pack will face Tiffin and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sept. 1 and Quincy and Ouachita Baptist on Sept. 2. Those four teams combined to post an 82-42 overall record a season ago, including Quincy posting a 28-3 record and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Midwest Regional. Texas A&M-Kingsville went 20-10 last season and Ouachita Baptist posted a 19-12 record.
The following weekend (Sept. 8-9), the Pack will play four matches at the Fort Lewis Invitational in Durango, Colo. At the two-day event, the Pack will face Angelo State and Southwestern Oklahoma State on Sept. 8 and then face Texas A&M-International and East Central (Okla.) University on Sept. 9. Texas A&M-International went 23-8 last season and advanced to the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament, while Southwestern Oklahoma State was 17-12 and advanced to the semifinals of the Great American Conference Tournament.
Following back-to-back tournaments to open the 2023, the Pack will open RMAC play on Sept. 15 at New Mexico Highlands, before playing its first home match of the season on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in Massari Arena against Adams State.
The remainder of the first month of the regular season will be spent away from Pueblo as the Pack will play RMAC matches on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 at Black Hills State and South Dakota School of Mines, before playing matches on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30 at Regis against UCCS on Sept. 29 and Regis on Sept. 30. Regis went 22-8 and 16-2 in the RMAC last season and advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament hosted by MSU Denver.
CSU Pueblo will open the month of October with home RMAC matches on Oct. 6 against Colorado Mesa and on Oct. 7 against Westminster University. Both of those matches will be held in conjunction with Alumni Weekend for the Pack. Colorado Mesa went 22-7 overall and 15-3 in the RMAC a season ago and advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional semifinals.
The following weekend, the Pack will play RMAC matches on Oct. 12 at Chadron State and Oct. 14 at Colorado Christian, before returning home for matches on Oct. 20-21 against Mines and MSU Denver. Mines went 22-7 overall and 15-3 in the RMAC last season and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA South Central Regional, while MSU Denver went 30-2 overall, captured the RMAC title with a 16-0 record and fell to West Texas A&M in the finals of the NCAA South Central Regional on the Roadrunners' home court. MSU Denver defeated the Pack in three sets in the first round of last year's NCAA South Central Regional.
The Pack will close out the month of October with road matches at Mines against Colorado Christian on Oct. 27 and Mines on Oct. 28.
CSU Pueblo will remain on the road the first weekend in November (Nov. 3-4) as they travel to play RMC matches in Gunnison, Colo., against Western Colorado and then in Durango, Colo., against Fort Lewis College.
The Pack will conclude the 2023 regular season with home matches on Nov. 10 against UCCS and Nov. 11 against Regis. The Regis match on Nov. 11 will serve as Senior Day for the Pack.
Following the conclusion of the regular season, the top eight teams in the final league standings will qualify for the RMAC Tournament, which is scheduled for Nov. 14 (quarterfinals) at the site of the Top 4 seed and Nov. 17-18 for the semifinals and finals. The semifinals and finals will be hosted by the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals.
The NCAA South Central Regional Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at a site to be determined, while the NCAA National Championships are slated for Dec. 7-9 in Moon Township, Pa.
