Women's Lacrosse Begins Final Stretch of Regular Season Saturday at Fort Lewis

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse will hit the road for the first time in a month this Saturday, April 22 as the ThunderWolves travel to Durango, Colo., for a 1 p.m. Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game with Fort Lewis College.

The Pack, who is coached by interim first year coach Taylor Christensen, comes into this weekend's action sporting a 1-10 overall record and an 0-7 mark in the RMAC after completing its 2023 home schedule last weekend with setbacks to Westminster (18-7) and Colorado Mesa (19-1). Overall, the Pack have lost six straight games since picking up its lone win of the season on March 21 at Erskine College, 21-5.

Offensively, the Pack have scored 107 goals in 11 games and are averaging 9.7 goals per game as freshman midfielder Katie Broom (Houston, Texas/Spring) leads the way with 21 goals and also leads with 18 assists for a team-best 39 points. Freshman midfielder Elise Magee (Port Moody, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best Secondary) is right behind Broom in goals with 19 and has had five assists for 24 points.

In addition to Broom and Magee, four other Pack players have scored double-digit goals on the year as senior midfielder Caira Lessick (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) has scored 16 goals, while senior attacker Sedona Sargent (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome) has tallied 15 goals. Junior midfielder Baylee Mee (Reno, Nev./Galena) and sophomore attacker Parker Delp (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) have scored 14 and 13 goals respectively.

Along with Broom's 18 assists, which are second-most in the RMAC, Sargent has tallied seven assists, while Mee has had six assists.

Broom has taken a team-leading 55 shots and put 33 of those shots on goal, while Sargent is second in shots taken with 52 and put a team-leading 38 shots on goal. Lessick is third in shots with 40 and has put 25 of those on goal.

Lessick leads the RMAC in draw controls per game as she is averaging 5.73 per game as she has recorded 63 in 11 games. In addition, Broom is sixth in the RMAC in draw controls per game at 3.36 as she has recorded 37 and Mee has tallied 33 on the year.

Mee, though, leads the team in ground balls with 27, while Lessick is next with 21 and Broom is third with 19 on the season.

Defensively, the Pack are allowing 17.4 goals per game and have caused 106 turnovers, while their opponents have had 194 turnovers in 11 games. Mee leads the way with 14 caused turnovers and is averaging 1.27 per game, which is sixth-best in the RMAC. The Pack's opponents, though, have committed 20 or more turnovers in two of the last three games, including Mesa recording 27 turnovers last Sunday.  

In goal, sophomore Naomi Price-Burton (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) has played every minute this season in net as has recorded 78 saves and has allowed 191 goals as she has faced 375 shots. Her 7.1 saves per game are fifth-best in the RMAC, while her 17.36 goals-against-average is sixth in the RMAC.

ABOUT FORT LEWIS
Fort Lewis comes into Saturday's game with CSU Pueblo sporting a 2-8 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the RMAC. The Skyhawks have won two of its last three games with the lone loss being a 10-8 home loss last Friday to Colorado Mesa. The Skyhawks wins have come at CSU Pueblo (17-9) on April 7 and at home last Sunday to Westminster (14-13). The Skyhawks remain in contention to earn one of the four spots in the RMAC Tournament as they are currently fifth in the league standings, but one league win behind both UCCS and Westminster.

The Skyhawks win over the Pack in the team's first meeting on April 7 snapped an eight game losing skid for Fort Lewis that had dated to last season.

As a team, FLC has scored 89 goals in 10 games and are averaging 8.9 goals per game with junior attacker Haley Dostie leading the way with 35 goals, which are third-most in the league. Dostie, who was named this week's RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, is second in the league in goals per game (3.50) and leads the league in points per game (4.1). Dostie has scored 39 percent of her team's goals and has had a hand in 41 of its 89 goals.

In addition to Dostie, who had four goals and two assists in the earlier meeting with the Pack, junior midfielder Ellie Martinez is second on the team in goals with 13 and also has two assists for 15 points.

The Skyhawks have only recorded 28 assists on their 89 goals this season with redshirt freshman attacker Valerie Garcia leading the way with seven, while Dostie is second with six.

Dostie and Martinez are the team's top two shot takers as they have combined for 90 shots on the year with Dostie having taken 65 and is averaging 6.5 shots per game, which is third-most in the league and Martinez has taken 35 shots. Dostie has an 88 percent shots on goal percentage as she has put 57 of her 65 shots on goal and her 5.70 shots on goal is tops in the RMAC.

Senior midfielder Rebecca Kiyokawa leads the team in draw controls with 26, while senior midfielder Autumn Rymerson is second with 22 draw controls. As a team, they average only 11.20 draw controls per game.

Nine Fort Lewis players have recorded 10 or more ground balls on the year with senior goalie Averi Basso leading the way with 22 ground balls, while Dostie has had 19 and Kiyokawa has recorded 18 ground balls.

Defensively, the Skyhawks have caused 73 turnovers with freshman defender Samantha Rodgers leading the way with 15 and she is averaging 1.50 caused turnovers per game, which is third in the league. Kiyokawa has caused eight turnovers and Dostie has caused seven turnovers on the year.

Basso controls the goal for the Skyhawks as she has played all but 35 minutes this season in goal. On the year, she has recorded 100 saves and has allowed 133 goals. Her 100 saves are second-best in the league, while her 10.30 saves per game are also second-best in the RMAC.

The Skyhawks are coached by Ashley Travis, who is in her fourth season at FLC's coach. She has posted a 14-27 record as FLC's coach, including an 11-17 mark in RMAC play. She has led the program to back-to-back RMAC Tournament appearances.

Saturday's game will mark the 15th all-time meeting and second this season between the two schools with Fort Lewis holding a commanding 12-2 lead in the series. The Skyhawks have won five straight games in the series, including collecting a 17-9 win earlier this season in Pueblo. Fort Lewis leads 6-0 at home and is 6-2 in the series in Pueblo. The Skyhawks are 8-1 in the series in RMAC play.
