PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State Pueblo women's swimming and diving team opened the home portion of its 2023-24 schedule here Saturday by splitting a double dual meet with Colorado School of Mines and Adams State held at the Sam Jones Aquatic Center.
In Saturday's double-dual meet, the ThunderWolves collected a 117-56 win over Adams State and suffered a 136-50 setback to No. 22 ranked Mines.
The Pack swam in 11 events on Saturday and earned two overall individual wins and set three pool records. Overall, on the day, the women's team broke eight pool records as Mines broke five pool records.
Perhaps the biggest highlight of the day for CSU Pueblo was junior
Paola Yolanda C Wu (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/University of Indianapolis) setting new pool records and taking home first place in both the 400 Individual Medley and 200 Breaststroke.
In the 400 IM, Wu recorded a time of 4:45.84 to finish in first place over Mines' Zooecia Phoebus, who also set a pool record with her second-place time of 4:48.96. The old pool record was 4:49.20 set by University of New Mexico's Mari Aoki in 2021.
The other pool record by the Pack was set in the 200 Breaststroke by Wu as she finished in first place with a time of 2:29.83, which bettered the old pool record of 2:33.74 set by University of New Mexico's Raissa Regatta Gavino in 2021. In addition to Wu, Mines' Phoebus also set a pool record with a second-place time of 2:31.28, while CSU Pueblo freshman
Olivia Dannhaus (Sheridan, Wyo./Sheridan) also broke the old pool record of 2:31.98 to finish in third place in the event.
In Saturday's meet, the Pack won all 11 events against the Grizzlies, while Mines won nine of the 11 events against the Pack.
Saturday's meet started with the 200 Medley Relay and the Pack finished second and fourth overall. The Pack's 'A' relay team was second with a time of 1:52.51, while the 'B' relay team was fourth with a time of 1:56.93. Mines won the event with a pool record time of 1:49.45. In the 1,000 freestyle, the Pack finished third and fourth overall as Denn was third with a time of 11:34.72 and junior
Markina Evdokimoff (Joshua Tree, Calif./Yucca Valley) was fourth with a time of 12:08.93. Mines finished first and second in the event with times of 11:01.99 and 11:03.37.
The Pack were also third and fourth in the 200 freestyle as Guareno recorded a third place time of 2:02.14 and Dutkowiak was fourth with a time of 2:05.75. Mines took home the top two spots with times of 1:58.89 and 2:01.55.
Freeman and Dutkowiak finished third and fourth in the 50 freestyle with times of 26.56 and 26.76 respectively. Mines was first and second with times of 25.09 and 25.61.
Following Wu's pool record time in the 400 IM, the swimmers then competed in the 200 butterfly as Perez was third with a time of 2:20.82 and junior
Nalani Wess (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) was fourth with a time of 2:29.15. Mines finished first and second as both Savannah Karas and Kylie VanderMeer set pool records in the event with times of 2:11.95 and 2:12.09. The old pool mark was 2:12.21 set by UNM's Kailey Turner in 2021.
In the 100 freestyle, Denn and freshman
Abigail Boyle (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) finished third and fourth overall with times of 56.65 and 1:00.43. Annie Osmun of Mines won the event in a new pool record time of 53.53, which bettered the old mark of 53.74 set by UNM's Kathryn McCarter in 2021.
Guareno and freshman
McKenna Schilling (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake) were third and fifth in the 200 backstroke with times of 2:14.57 and 2:22.66 respectively. Adams State's Peyton Schwartz was fourth with a time of 2:17.74, while Mines' Emi Jedryk finished first with a time of 2:11.15 and Kerrigan Hemp was second with a time of 2:11.79.
Perez and Evdokimoff finished third and fourth in the 500 freestyle with times of 5:43.82 and 5:52.86 respectively. Mines placed first and second in the event.
Following the 200 breaststroke, in which the top three swimmers set new pool records, the final event was the 400 freestyle relay. In the event, the Pack recorded second and fourth place finishes as the 'A' relay team was second with a time of 3:49.49, while the 'B' relay team was fourth with a time of 3:58.25. Mines' 'A' team won the relay with a pool record time of 3:39.69, which bettered old record of 3:44.87 set by Mines in 2019.
The members of the second place 200 freestyle relay team were Wu, Guareno, Denn and Dutkowiak, while the 'B' relay members were Dannhaus, Evdokimoff, Boyle and Lagrove.
CSU Pueblo will return to pool next weekend (Oct. 20-21) as they host Nebraska-Kearney and Western Colorado for a tri-meet at the Sam Jones Aquatic Center. The tri-meet will begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20 and then start at 9 a.m. on Oct. 21.
