Box Score SALT LAKE CITY (April 10, 2022) – A big second quarter for Colorado State University Pueblo women's lacrosse (1-9, 1-5 RMAC) was not enough for the ThunderWolves, as the team dropped the RMAC battle to Westminster College (2-7, 2-4 RMAC) 23-12 Sunday afternoon.
Â
Westminster started the game off with four quick goals to go against the CSU Pueblo efforts. Eight minutes into the match,Â
Caira Lessick netted the Pack's first goal of the afternoon with a score of a free position shot.
Â
Emily Eller netted the Pack's second unanswered goal off another free position shot with 3:49 to go in the opening quarter. Westminster was able to find an answer and another goal to put the ThunderWolves in a 6-2 hole after one quarter of play.
Â
The second quarter saw the pace of play pick up on both sides. After a draw control was possessed byÂ
Parker Delp, Ashley Hendricks slung in a shot to reinvigorate the ThunderWolves' attackers.Â
Â
CSU Pueblo was able to rattle off a couple shots following the Hendricks goal, but it was Westminster who would log the next two scores. Lessick gained draw control after the Griffins' eighth goal and raced down the field to fire in her second goal of the day.
Â
After getting down 10-4, the Pack were back on the attack. Lessick tallied back-back goals within 1:30 of each other and was soon followed by Hendricks' second score to draw the Pack back within three. The quick 3-0 run from the Pack put the team trailing 10-7 headed into the halftime break.
Â
Out of the break, the Griffins offense came out firing. With 8:52 to go in the third, Lessick hit her fifth goal of the day off an assist fromÂ
Lindsey Locke. The third quarter closed with a goal fromÂ
Annabelle Hollandbeck and the Pack trailed 14-9.
Â
Goals byÂ
Hannah Huchette and Lessick drew the Pack closer, with them trailing 15-11 with 9:51 to go in the contest. Unfortunately for the Pack, the Griffins hit their stride in the fourth.
Â
After aÂ
Baylee Mee goal with 6:55 to go in the game, Westminster went on a scoring run. The Griffins ended the game on a 6-0 run and sealed the Pack road-loss 23-12.
Â
Lessick netted six goals on the afternoon to log a career-high. Lessick also logged six ground balls to lead the Pack.Â
Â
CSU Pueblo logged 44 shots to Westminster's 42. The Pack were 11-14 on clears and were able to pull in 25 ground balls to the Griffins' 24.
Â
The Pack look to rebound next week, as the squad hosts UCCS Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. and Regis on Sunday at noon. Each contest will take place at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
