ThunderWolves Tennis sweeps CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (April 7, 2018) - Both Colorado State University-Pueblo tennis programs defeated Colorado Christian University Saturday in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest in Lakewood, Colorado. The ThunderWolves women then fell to Dixie State University in a non conference match at Lakewood Park.

The women's team (4-18) improved to 2-2 in RMAC play with a 7-2 victory against CCU. The ThunderWolves took a 2-1 lead into singles play, as the No. 2 and No. 3 teams came away with victories. The combination of Nia Matthews (Jr., Houston, Texas) and Kali Hamilton (Fr., Grapevine, Texas) won 8-2 at No. 2 to improve to 8-11 as a squad. At No. 3 doubles, senior Kristin Jensen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sophomore Sarah Megilligan (Pueblo West, Colo.) came away with a 8-4 win. 

The Pack won five of the six singles bouts, as three athletes went 2-0. Hamilton won at No. 1 by the scores of 6-4, 7-5, while Matthews got it done at No. 2 with a straight set 6-2, 6-0 win. Jensen also was perfect against the Cougars with her 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5. 

The No. 1 doubles pair of seniors Samantha Cachutt (Caracas, Venezuela) and Acacia Dettman (Perris, Calif.) lost 8-6, but both won at singles. Dettman won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, while Cachutt posted a comeback win at No. 6 by the scores of 0-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5). 

Against DSU, the doubles teams could only muster five total points, while no singles players won a set. Playing up to No. 3, Jensen was the closest to get a set, as she lost 6-2, 7-5. 

The 47th-ranked men's team allowed just one team point to the Cougars in an 8-1 win that improved their record to 11-12 overall and 3-1 in league play. 

All three doubles duos won to give the Pack a 3-0 lead. At No. 1, freshman Thomas Pudney (Southend, United Kingdom) and Ogulcan Deniz (Jr., Istanbul, Turkey) posted an 8-6 victory, while the No. 2 and No. 3 teams both won by the score of 8-4. At No. 2, juniors James Ryan (London, England) and Dante Alcala (Pueblo, Colo.) partnered up, while at No. 3 senior David Mould (Upminster Essex, United Kingdom) and freshman Cade Boedeker (North Richland Hills, Texas) got the win. 

Ranked No. 15 nationally, Pudney recorded a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 1 to go 2-0 on the day. Deniz also picked up a second win when he recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2. Boedeker was the third member of the ThunderWolves to win twice when he dominated his match at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

Sophomore Rafael Abreu (San Paulo, Brazil) got in on the action at No. 5 and won 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2), while senior Steven Alcala (Pueblo, Colo.) captured the No. 6 match with a 6-2, 6-1 win. 

Both CSU-Pueblo tennis teams will travel to Metro State University of Denver April 13 for a rescheduled RMAC match from Friday, then jump on I-70 to battle Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado for the final regular season and RMAC match of 2018. Both matches are slated for a 10 a.m.
