Mavericks sweep ThunderWolves in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 14, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo tennis squads fell to Colorado Mesa University Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches in Grand Junction, Colorado. The men lost 6-3, while the women suffered an 8-1 setback. 

The men ranked No. 49 entering the match against the rival Mavericks (7-18, 2-3 RMAC). The Pack (11-13, 3-2 RMAC) were down 2-1 after singles, then could only muster two singles wins. 

The doubles pair of juniors James Ryan (London, England) and Dante Alcala (Pueblo, Colo.) earned a victory at the No. 2 spot, as they won 9-8 (4) in the tiebreak. 

Junior Ogulcan Deniz (Istanbul, Turkey) gathered a win at No. 2 singles when he posted the scores of 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. Senior Steven Alcala (Pueblo, Colo.) won at No. 6 singles with the results of 6-0 and 6-4. 

On the women's side, the ThunderWolves (4-19, 2-3 RMAC) lost 8-1 to the Mavericks (12-16, 3-2 RMAC). The lone win came at No. 3 singles when senior Acacia Dettman (Perris, Calif.) won the first set 6-3, lost the second 2-6, but won the tiebreak set 10-5. 

Both teams will conclude the regular season with an RMAC match at Metro State University at Denver. The Roadrunner men are ranked 36th nationally. Match times are scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
