Pack men defeat Colorado Mesa; Pack Tennis weekend recap

PUEBLO, Colo. (March 24, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's tennis team defeated Colorado Mesa University in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest at Pueblo City Park Saturday. The women's team lost to the Mavericks 6-3 and finished the weekend 0-3.

The No. 45 ThunderWolves (10-12, 2-1 RMAC) defeated CMU by the score of 5-4 and closed the weekend 1-1 after losing 9-0 to No. 19 Midwestern State University Friday. 

In the win against CMU, both Thomas Pudney (Fr., Southend, United Kingdom) and Ogulcan Deniz (Jr., Istanbul, Turkey) earned two victories. The pair combined at No. 1 doubles to post an 8-4 victory. Ranked No. 14 nationally, Pudney went on to win at No. 1 singles 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Deniz gathered a win at No. 2 singles when he recorded a 6-1, 6-4 straight set victory. 

Junior James Ryan (London, England) picked up the final point for the Pack when he won his No. 3 singles match despite losing the first set 3-6. He won the final two sets 6-2, 6-2. 

In the fall, CMU defeated the ThunderWolves by the score of 5-4. 

The women's team finished the home season with an 0-3 weekend. Friday the squad lost to No. 21 Midwestern State and Angelo State University by a 9-0 result. Saturday was better, as the Pack suffered the 6-3 setback to the Mavericks. 

The ThunderWolves won No. 2 doubles by an 8-5 score, as Kali Hamilton (Fr., Grapevine, Texas) and Nia Matthews (Jr., Houston, Texas) came together to get the win. 

At No. 3 singles, senior Acacia Dettman (Perris, Calif.) got a victory by the scores of 6-3, 6-2. Fellow senior Kristin Jensen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also won her final match at Pueblo City Park when she recorded a 6-4 win in the first set, lost the second set 6-2 and finished the bout off by winning the tiebreak. 

Next up for the ThunderWolves is a April 6 meeting at MSU Denver.
