Gorillas grind out 6-3 win over Pack

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 9, 2018) Despite a 3-1 lead in the late innings, Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball could not salvage a series win over Pittsburg State University as the Pack dropped the series finale 6-3 Friday at Rawlings Field.

Ambrose Romero (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) drove in two of the Pack's three runs. Romero went 2-for-4 with a walk. He finished the series with a .556 average (5-for-9), a .692 OBP and six RBIs.

Senior Jake Boyd (Salt Lake City, Utah) had a 3-for-4 at the plate. Boyd also stole a base.

Dakota Popham (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) slugged two hits in three trips. Popham also scored a run. Zach Hoffman (Sr.,  South Jordan Utah) also had two hits.

Jason Lighthall (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) tossed 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two runs). Lighthall struck out four, but earned a no decision.

The Pack got off to a strong start, scoring in each of the first three innings. Romero drove in Gilbert Sauceda (Jr., Indio, Calif.) with an RBI single to put the Pack in front 1-0.

After the Gorillas got on the board in the top of the second, The Pack answered with a run of its own in the bottom half. Popham and Boyd led off the inning with singles. Billy Reyes (Jr., Yucaipa, Calif.) drove in Popham on a sacrifice fly to give the Pack a 2-1 lead.

The ThunderWolves added to their lead in the third. Mason Krueger (Jr., Draper, Utah)crushed a double. He would score on another Romero single to give the Pack a 3-1 lead.

Lighthall and the Pack ran into trouble in the seventh. The Gorillas scored two runs to tie the game at the three heading into the seventh inning stretch.

Pittsburg State added a run in the eighth and two runs in the ninth to take a 6-3 lead. The ThunderWolves had runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth, but could not bring a run home.

Ethan Vanderpool threw 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the win for Pitt State. Ryan Laydon (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) took the loss for the Pack, giving up one unearned run in 0.1 innings. Cody White earned a save for the second consecutive day. The Pack committed three errors, while the Gorillas had four defensive miscues.

The Pack will continue their season opening nine-game homestand Thursday when they play Northwest Nazarene University at 12 p.m. This series will continue with a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. and wrap up Saturday with another 12 p.m. start.
