Pack rallies past Northwest Nazarene to complete sweep

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 17, 2018) Down three entering the sixth inning, Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball rallied to defeat Northwest Nazarene University 11-7 Saturday at Rawlings Field.

The ThunderWolves earned their first sweep since March 20-21 when the Pack swept Adams State University in four games at Rawlings Field. CSU-Pueblo now has a 6-3 record in 2018. Northwest Nazarene dropped to 2-8.

Chris Devery (Sr., Saugus, Calif.) had a perfect day at the plate, going 5-for-5. Devery launched his first home run of the season over the left field fence and drove in three runs. The Pack's third baseman also scored two runs. Devery finished the series 11-for-17 (.647) with 10 RBIs.

Dakota Popham (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Center Fielder Zach Hoffman (Sr., South Jordan, Utah) also picked up three RBIs.

Ambrose Romero (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) scored three runs. Romero had two hits in three trips and walked twice.

Gilbert Sauceda (Jr., Indio, Calif.) and Mason Krueger (Jr., Draper, Utah) both scored twice. Sauceda had two hits to raise his average to .375.

Freshman Aidan Welch (Seattle, Wash.) had a RBI for the second consecutive day. Welch went 2-for-3 with a walk in his second career start.

The Pack fell behind before they even picked up their bats. Northwest Nazarene hit a solo shot in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.

CSU-Pueblo answered in the third. Devery clubbed his first home run of the season to tie the game at three.

After the Nighthawks scored in the top of the fourth, the Pack tied it again in the bottom half. Romero singled and subsequently scored on a Devery double to tie the game at two.

The Nighthawks tacked on one in the fifth and two in the sixth to push their lead to 5-2. Though they trailed for the third time in the series, CSU-Pueblo fought back again. Romero doubled and came home on a Popham single in the bottom of the sixth. Popham scored a Welch single to cut the Nighthawks lead to one.

Northwest Nazarene put up a run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-4. The Pack erupted after the seventh inning stretch with five runs in the bottom half. Hoffman hit a bases loaded triple to put the Pack in front. Popham and Jorge Duarte (Sr., San Luis, Ariz.) both had RBI singles in the seventh that gave CSU-Pueblo a 9-6 lead.

The Pack tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth. Ryan Laydon (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) shut down the Nighthawks for the last 2.1 innings to earn his second win of the series.  Laydon allowed one run on three hits and no walks.

After a 6-3 homestand to start the season, the Pack will hit the road for 12 consecutive games. The ThunderWolves will start their road trip Friday Feb. 23 when they face Angelo State University at 3 p.m.
