PUEBLO, Colo. (December 8, 2018) - Colorado State University-Pueblo Swimming & Diving won seven events, but fell to Colorado College 131-112 in the Pack's home opener at Sam Jones Aquatic Center Saturday.
Natalie Rotondo (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) collected three first place finishes. Rotondo started her day with a first place showing in the 200 free (2:03.56). The freshman also claimed victory in the 100 fly, reaching the wall in a time of 1:00.86.
Rotondo wrapped up her incredible day with a win in the 200 back (1:04.01). She now has six wins on the season.
Freshman,
Julia Whitfield (Wichita, Kan.) won both of the freestyle sprint events. Whitfield out-touched teammate
Phoebe Pontious (Caledonia, Mich.) in the 50 free to post the winning time of 25.31. Pontious placed second with a time of 25.35
Whitfield and Pontious went 1-2 in the 100 free as well. Whitfield raced to first with a time of 55.15 Pontious swam her way to second with a mark of 55.58. The two victories were the first wins of Whitfield's career.
April McDonough (Sr., Frisco, Texas) collected her first win of the season with a first place showing in the 1000 free. McDonough's time of 11:34.34 topped the field by 11 seconds. She also took second in the 500 free (5:37.86). McDonough was less than a second behind the winner.
McDonough, Pontious, and Whitfield teamed with
Alyssa Grunloh (Fr., Round Rock, Texas) to win the 200 free relay. This quartet posted a time of 1:44.32, beating the Tigers top relay team by three full seconds.
Arianna Rohde (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska) scored seven individual points for the Pack. Rohde recorded a third place finish in the 100 fly (1:01.83). She was narrowly edged out in the 100 back, taking second place with a time of 1:04.52, half of a second behind Rotondo. Rohde's time gave the Pack its third 1-2 finish of the night.
Emma Chvatal (Fr., Carterville, Ill.) posted a third place finish in the 200 IM (2:27.54). Chvatal also took fourth in the 1000 free (12:01.70).
The Pack will take a holiday hiatus. The ThunderWolves will return to the pool Jan. 5, when they compete against Arizona Christian University.
