Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. (April 22, 2017) – Two clutch starting pitching performances led Colorado State University – Pueblo Baseball to a sweep of Regis University in their scheduled doubleheader games Saturday at Rawlings Field. The Pack knocked off the Rangers 2-1 and 4-1 in the two seven inning showdowns.
On Saturday, the two teams also finished the last 1.5 innings of their game from Friday night that was postponed due to rain. Regis won this contest 5-2. After the three games were decided, the Pack holds a 19-22 record with a 13-14 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. Regis slipped to 25-17 (18-13 RMAC).
Making his first career start, Bret Ricklefs (Jr., Topeka, Kan.) dominated game two of the four game series. Normally a reliever, Ricklefs lasted the full seven innings for a complete game. He held the Rangers to just four hits and walked just one batter. Ricklefs would strikeout four and induce three double plays. He improved to 3-2 on the season.
Not to be outdone, Kyle Peeler (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) shined in game two. Peeler kept Regis out of the hit column for the first 3.1 innings of the game. He threw five total innings, and surrendered just two hits, a run, and two walks. Peeler struck out three to earn his second win of the season.
Colton Follet (Jr., Simi Valley, Calif.) shut the door on the Rangers in game three of the series with two scoreless innings of relief. He allowed two hits and rang up one batter en route to his fourth save of the season.
In game one of the series Friday, the Pack jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Derron Davis (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) scored in the fourth inning. Then the weather hit and Regis would take advantage of some Pack defensive miscues to take a 5-1 lead before the game was postponed to Saturday due to rain.
When play resumed, the Pack attempted a rally. Gilbert Sauceda (So., Indio, Calif.) scored on an Ambrose Romero (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) base knock to make it 5-2 after eight. However, the Rangers would turn it over to their closer, Patrick Kenny in the ninth inning and Kenny would get it done to give the Rangers a 5-2 win in game one of the series.
Kyle Lazcano (Sr., Anaheim Hills, Calif.) suffered his first defeat of the season, going to 5-1 on the year. The Pack's ace threw 6.1 innings and struck out five. Lazcano allowed five runs, but only one was earned.
In game two of the series, Regis got on the board in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. It would be their only offense off of Ricklefs.
The Pack answered with a run in the fifth. David Gunther (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) brought in pinch runner Jake Boyd (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) on a sacrifice fly that tied the game at one.
In the seventh inning, the Pack broke the tie. With the bases loaded and two outs, Chris Devery (Jr., Saugus, Calif.) stepped in with a chance to win the game. Devery watched four pitches from Jake Griffith miss as he drew a walk off walk as Boyd scored the winning run in a 2-1 final.
Game two got off to a better start for the Pack. They would get the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning when Sauceda drove in Zach Hoffman (Jr., South Jordan, Utah) on a RBI groundout.
The Pack got another run in the fourth inning, Romero doubled. Tanner Fuhrmann (Jr., Flagstaff, Ariz.) smacked a double of his own to chase Romero home and put the Pack up 2-1.
After a Regis run in the fifth, the Pack retaliated with a run in the bottom half. Devery belted a triple that scored Sauceda and made it 3-1. The Pack would tack on one more in the sixth as Fuhrmann slugged a single that plated pinch runner Justin Willman (Sr., Falcon, Colo.) to make it 4-1. Fuhrmann went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs in game two.
The four runs would be more than enough for Peeler and Follet as they closed the door on the Rangers. Regis would muster just eight hits in the two seven inning games Saturday.
CSU-Pueblo and Regis will wrap up their four-game set Sunday. First pitch at Rawlings Field is set for 12 p.m.
