Box Score

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 25, 2017) –  Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball split their doubleheader against Lubbock Christian University Saturday. The Pack dominated game one 12-5, but fell in game two 7-3 in a pair of seven inning showdowns.

Brandon Castaneda (Sr., Azusa, Calif.) continued to abuse Lubbock Christian pitching Saturday, going 4-for7 at the dish. Castaneda also scored three times and drove in two runs. He is now 7-for-11 in the series.

Catcher Ambrose Romero (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) drove in four runs.  He went 3-for-4 in game one of the series. Romero has a .452 average this season.

The ThunderWolves offense caught fire in game one. CSU-Pueblo scored three runs in the top of the first. Castaneda drove in Chris Devery (Jr., Saugus, Calif.) and Romero with a RBI single. Gilbert Sauceda (So., Indio, Calif.) came home on a wild pitch.

After Lubbock answered with two runs in the first, the Pack scored one in the second when Romero drove in Jorge Duarte (Jr., Dan Luis, Ariz.) to put the Pack back up two.

The Pack tacked on five runs in the third inning and three in the fourth to open a 12-2 lead. Derron Davis (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.), David Gunther (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.)  and Castaneda each scored twice. Castaneda, Duarte, Sauceda, and Zach Hoffman (Jr., South Jordan, Utah) all drove in two runs.

Charles Steele (Jr., Encino, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.  As a team, the Pack out-hit the Chaps 18 to13 in game one.

Josh Nuernberg (Sr., Las Vegas,  Nev.) earned the win in game one. Nuernberg worked five full innings, allowing three runs. His record now stands 2-1 on the season.

The Pack continued its offensive outburst in the first inning of game two. Romero drove in Hoffman with a groundout to put the Pack up 1-0.

However, the Chaps would bounce back with two runs in their half of the first. They would score one more in the second and another in the third to open a 4-1 lead and chase Pack starter Colton Follett (Jr., Simi Valley, Calif.). He now stands 0-1 on the season after a loss in game two.

Duarte drove in Castaneda in the sixth to close the gap to 4-2. Lubbock Christian ended the Pack's rally dreams with a three -run sixth.

Sauceda scored in the seventh on a Romero sacrifice fly. However, it would not be enough as the Chaps came away with a 7-3 win.

CSU-Pueblo now owns a 6-7 record overall. The Chapparals hold a 9-6 mark on the season.

The Pack and the Chaps will wrap up their four-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. with a nine-inning game. Sunday's game with the Chaps will also conclude the Pack's non-conference schedule. CSU-Pueblo will start Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Friday March 3 when they host Metro State University-Denver at 2 p.m.  at Rawlings Field.
