ThunderWolves edge Grizzlies in 3-2 pitchers duel

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 18, 2016) –  Down two runs in the seventh,Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball rallied past Adams State University 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Rawlings Field.

The win sends the ThunderWolves to .500 play at 4-4. Adams State dropped to 3-7.

Zach Hoffman (Jr., South Jordan, Utah) scored two of the Pack's three runs, including the go-ahead run in the seventh. Hoffman reached base in four of his five trips to the dish, going 1-for-2 with three walks. He would also swipe his fifth base of the season. 

Jorge Duarte (Jr., San Luis, Ariz.) reached base in all four trips. Duarte went 1-for-1 and also took three walks. Adams State issued 10 free passes Saturday.

Catcher Ambrose Romero (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) finished 2-for-4 at the dish with a RBI. He also drew a walk. Romero is now hitting .519 this season. 

The Pack struck in the very first inning. Hoffman drew a walk the stole second. He would score on a Romero single. 

Derek Rohleder (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) dominated the Grizzlies through the first five innings, limiting them to just two hits and keeping them scoreless. In the sixth the Grizzlies would strike for two runs and chase Rohleder.

CSU-Pueblo's starter lasted 5.1 innings, giving up just four hits and two runs. He walked two and struck out five. Despite his impressive start, Rohleder left in line for the loss.

The Pack answered in the seventh. Duarte and Hoffman both walked. After a strikeout, Romero and Gilbert Sauceda (So., Indio, Calif.) also drew a base on balls to bring in Duarte and tie the game at two.

With the bases juiced, Brandon Castaneda (Sr., Azusa, Calif.) dropped down a suicide squeeze. Hoffman dashed home on the play that gave the Pack a 3-2 lead.

After two scoreless innings of work from Josh Nuernberg (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.), the Pack turned it over to Colton Follett (Jr., Simi Valley, Calif.) for the final five outs. Though he allowed a pair of hits, Follett closed the door on the Grizzlies to give the Pack a 3-2 win.

Nuernberg earned the win to even his record at 1-1. Follett tallied his second save of the season. Dylan Sherry took the loss for Adams State.

The ThunderWolves will wrap up their 10-game season –opening homestand Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. with a game against Regis University. The Pack will conclude their four-game weekend with a rematch against the Grizzlies 30 minutes after the Pack's showdown with the Rangers. Both games are scheduled for seven innings at Rawlings Field.
