Pack tennis teams go 1-1 on day one of RMAC Tournament; Play for third Saturday

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 22, 2016) - Both the Colorado State University-Pueblo tennis teams won their first matches of the 2016 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament at Pueblo City Park Friday, but fell in their second and will play for third-place Saturday.

The fourth-seeded ThunderWolves men (7-19) downed fifth-seed Colorado Christian University 5-0 in round one before falling to the top seed and No. 28, Western New Mexico University, by the score of 5-0. The Pack will battle Metro State University of Denver Saturday at 9 a.m. for third place.

The Pack women (4-21) was also the fourth seed entering the tournament and defeated CCU 5-1 to advance to play No. 1 seed Colorado Mesa University. After going down 3-0 following doubles play, the Pack won twice in singles before falling by the mark of 5-2. CSU-Pueblo also will play MSU Denver Saturday with the match scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.

For the women, Kristin Jensen (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) went 3-1, as she recorded a singles wins in both contests and added a victory at No. 1 doubles versus the Cougars with partner Toni Alvarez (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.). Junior Gia Montoya (Pueblo, Colo.) also went 3-1 for the Pack, as she posted wins at No. 6 singles and was victorious at No. 3 doubles against Colorado Christian.

On the men's side, four players recorded two wins on the day. The doubles pair of Marcelo Chaparro (Sr., Bogotá, Colombia) and Steven Alcala (So, Pueblo, Colo.) won twice at No. 3 doubles. The pair entered the tournament with the most doubles wins on the team and after an 8-4 win against CCU, recorded the upset of the Mustangs' No. 3 pair with an 8-4 victory. The No. 1 doubles pair of sophomores Siggy Menzel (Biggera Waters, Australia) and David Mould (Upminster Essex, United Kingdom) both won twice against CCU with an 8-4 doubles win. Menzel won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Mould won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.

Both Pack teams lost at MSU Denver earlier this month, as the men lost 8-1 and the women fell 7-2.
