Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. (April 22, 2016) — Baseball purists were in for a treat Friday night when the Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team opened up a four-game home series against Regis University as pitchers reigned supreme.
Unfortunately, for the Pack, they were on the wrong side of the pitchers' dual as they fell 2-1 to the Rangers.
CSU-Pueblo (22-12 overall, 16-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) received a gem from junior starting pitcher Cameron Weinberg (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) as he set his personal NCAA Division II high in strikeouts. He fanned 11 Rangers hitters over his 7 2/3 innings. The 11 strikeouts by Weinberg are the most in a game by a Pack starting pitcher since Zac Wittmus recorded 13 against Adams State on March 13, 2015.
Weinberg (3-4), who tossed a staggering 148 pitches in the tough-luck loss. All three of his walks issued came during the first three innings. One of the few mistakes made by Weinberg came in the top of the first on a solo home run by Ty Overboe. But the lefty got stronger as the game progressed as six out of the last eight outs he recorded were via a strikeout.
The junior received some help from senior catcher Beau Cebulski (Las Animas, Colo.), and senior outfielder Jordan Godman (Las Vegas, Nev.), as Cebulski was 3-of-4 throwing out runners on steal attempts and picked off an additional Rangers runner in the sixth.
Godman showed off his arm in the top of the fifth as he threw a bullet from right-center field to home plate, cutting down Weston Byers as he tried to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park home run. At the plate, the senior continued his torrid 2016 season with a 3-for-4 night to raise his Division II leading batting average to .507.
In the ninth, after Regis added an insurance run in the top of the inning, the Pack got on the scoreboard on a one-out, solo home run by junior shortstop Taylor Snyder (Elk Ridge, Utah). The laser to left-center field was Snyder's team-leading eighth long ball of the season.
Regis closer Casey Kennedy rebounded to get the final two outs, though, preserving the 2-1 victory for the Rangers.
After reaching base in 38 consecutive games, the Rangers kept senior first baseman Dominick Bregar (Pueblo, Colo.) off the base paths Friday. Bregar's streak began back on May 8, 2015.
The Pack will look to regroup Saturday when they take on the Rangers in the second game of the series, which is set for 1 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
