Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. (April 15, 2016) — Entering the weekend tied for second place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball and Colorado School of Mines both won one game of their doubleheader Friday at Pueblo's Runyon Field.
The Pack dropped game one 8-7 thanks to some defensive woes. CSU-Pueblo bounced back with a 5-3 win in game two. Both teams remained deadlocked in the RMAC standings with a 16-6 conference record. CSU-Pueblo is 22-11 overall. Mines stands at 23-11.
Cameron Weinberg (Jr., San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) threw a brilliant seven-inning complete game in the second contest. Weinberg struck out six batters, while allowing seven hits and a walk. Though three runs crossed the plate for Mines, they were all unearned due to a pair of Pack errors. Weinberg now stands at 3-3 on the season.
Senior Jordan Godman (Las Vegas, Nev.) pushed his average back to .500 thanks to a 5-for-7 day at the plate. He scored five runs and stole his RMAC leading 26th base. Godman also walked twice, reaching base seven times in nine trips on the day.
Dominick Bregar (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader. Bregar has now reached base safely in each of the Pack's 33 games in 2016 and in 38 consecutive contests dating back to 2015.
It didn't take the Pack long to get on the board in game one. Godman walked. He scored on a Bregar base knock to give the Pack a 1-0 lead, but the Orediggers answered in their half of the first to tie it at one.
In the top of third, Godman got on base with a single. He came home on a Bregar sacrifice fly. However, Mines knotted it up again at two in the bottom of the third.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, an error kept the inning alive for the Orediggers. They would go on to score four runs, two of which came on the play where the error was committed as Mines took a 6-2 lead.
Another two-out error allowed the Orediggers to tack on two more runs in the bottom of sixth. This gave Mines an 8-2 lead with just three innings to go.
The ThunderWolves began clawing their way back into the game in the top of the eighth. Brandon Castaneda (Jr., Azusa, Calif.) plated Taylor Snyder (Jr., Elk Ridge, Utah) on a RBI double to make it 8-3.
Down to their final two outs, the Pack fought back. Jordyn Compehos (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) reached base on an error. Godman and Gilbert Sauceda (Fr. Indio, Calif.) followed with singles to load the bases.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Oliver Jackson (Jr., Mission Viejo, Calif.) slugged a double that drove in Compehos and Godman.
On the following play, Sauceda and Jackson came home an error to cut the Mines lead to 8-7. With the tying run at second, Castaneda stepped up to the plate. He hit a long drive to deep right field, but it found a glove and the Pack wound up on the short end of an 8-7 final.
Brandon Conlin (Jr., Norco, Calif.) took the loss for the Pack as hiz record evens at 3-3. Conlin threw 4.2 innings allowing six runs, with just two earned.
Game two started with a pitcher's duel between Weinberg and Nate Olinger. The Orediggers got the only run in the first five innings in the top of the second. Weinberg stranded the bases loaded twice in the first four frames.
The Pack turned it around in the sixth inning. Beau Cebulski (Sr., Las Animas, Colo.) began the sixth with a double. Pinch runner, Justin Willman (Jr., Falcon, Colo.) reached home on a Godman single. A Mines error allowed Godman to come home and give the Pack a 2-1 lead.
After Godman scored, a lightning strike delayed play for over an hour, but the game would resume and the Pack's bats came out with the sun. In the seventh inning, Taylor Snyder (Jr., Elk Ridge, Utah) mashed his team-leading seventh home run of the season. Compehos and Godman scored on Snyder's dinger that put the Pack up 5-1.
Despite the delay, Weinberg took the ball and finished what he started. Although the Orediggers, scored twice on an error, Weinberg closed out the complete game when he struck out Jack Bevan to secure a 5-3 win for the Pack.
These two teams are scheduled to meet again Saturday at Runyon Field. This game, which would be a road game for the Pack, has first pitch set for 4 p.m. However, rain is forecasted for the Pueblo area Saturday. GoThunderWolves.com and the Pack's social media accounts will have updates on Saturday's game if and when they become available.
