PUEBLO, Colo. (March 5, 2016) –Colorado State University-Pueblo women's lacrosse earned its first win of 2016 in dominating fashion as the Pack smacked Nyack 17-3. The ThunderWolves scored the first 14 goals of the game as they blew out the Warriors by halftime and improved their record to 1-1.
The Pack set a school record for goals in a game with their 17 goal outburst. By pulling off the 14-goal win, the Pack also set a program record for largest margin of victory.
In her first game of the season, Allye Webb (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) sparked the Pack's offense. CSU-Pueblo's leader in goals a season ago, Webb netted four in her 2016 debut. She also dished out three assists in the win. Webb's seven-point game set a program record for most points in a game by a single player.
Ane Marie Horton (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) earned the win in her first career start. Horton denied nine of the 12 shots she faced in the win.
Maxine Bartholomew (So., Elk Grove, Calif.) scored two goals and added an assist. She set a career high with three points.
Defensively, the Pack caused 17 turnovers. Rachael Welzin (So., Farmington, Minn.) and Daniela Calvo each forced four takeaways. Calvo chipped in a goal and an assist. Welzin, a captain, secured three ground balls.
For the second game in a row, Ellie O'Brien (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) picked up five ground balls. O'Brien's 10 ground balls lead the team through two games.
The Pack got their first tally 2:23 into the first half as Sami LaBella (Fr., Pleasanton, Calif.) fired in her second goal of the season. Less than a minute later Webb torched in her first of the game to make it 2-0.
Just 20 seconds after Webb's second goal, Alix Zierden (So., Elk River, Minn.) scored on a free position shot, giving the Pack a 4-0 lead. Zierden would add another before halftime She now has three goals in 2016.
Impressively, Webb's four goals came within the first 11 minutes of the game. She also contributed two assists before halftime. Leah Neumann (So., Naperville, Ill.) rocketed in a pair of goals in the first half. Neumann's six goals in her first two games leads the Pack.
Bartholomew and Calvo scored goals in the first half. Allison Kobel (Fr., Torrance, Calif.)and Taylor Christensen (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.)also beat the goalie in the opening stanza as the Pack held a 13-0 lead at intermission. Christensen's goal came with the Pack a player up. Horton stopped all four shots she saw in the first.
The Pack made it 14-0 just 34 seconds into the second half. Abigail Holak (So., Duluth, Minn.) ripped in her first career goal to give the Pack a two touchdown lead.
Nyack would score three of the next four goals. However, Kobel, Christensen and Bartholomew all found the back of the net again in the second half as the Pack coasted to a 17-3 victory.
The Pack outshot Nyack 30-14. CSU-Pueblo put 24 of these shots on goal. Madeline Barbarino made seven saves for Nyack as the Warriors fell to 0-3.
With a program record for goals set against Nyack, the Pack will try get another victory Wednesday. However, CSU-Pueblo will face a tougher test as No.7 Lock Haven visits Pueblo. This contest between the Pack and the Bald Eagles begins at 4 p.m. at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Lacrosse Stadium.
