Godman guides Pack to extra inning victory in RMAC opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DENVER, Colo.(March 4, 2016) It took an extra inning, but Colorado State University Pueblo baseball rallied to defeat Regis University, 8-7 in 10 innings Friday. Down 7-3 entering the fifth, the Pack (7-5, 1-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference), scored the final five runs of the game to beat Regis (6-6, 0-1 RMAC) and win their first RMAC game of the season.

Senior, Jordan Godman (Las Vegas, Nev.) kick started the Pack's offense, finishing 4-for-6 on the day. Godman also drove in four runs and stole his RMAC leading ninth base. The Pack's center fielder has a hit in all 12 Pack games this season.

Brandon Castaneda (Jr., Azusa, Calif.) tallied two hits. Castaneda scored two runs and plated another. He went 2-for-4 on the day.

The Pack fell behind early. The Rangers snapped Brandon Conlin's (Jr., Norco, Calif.) 18 inning streak without an earned run, when back-to-back hits with a steal mixed in put Regis up 1-0 after one.

CSU-Pueblo answered in their half of the second. With two outs, Castaneda and Beau Cebulski (Sr., Las Animas, Colo.) singled to keep the inning alive.  David Gunther (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) reached base on an error as the Pack loaded the bases for Godman.

Godman delivered as he slugged a single that scored both Castaneda and Cebulski and sent Gunther to third. The senior speedster was not done there.

On the next play, Godman stole second. Regis attempted to throw out Godman. With the throw headed down to second base, Gunther broke for the plate. The throw was too late and Gunther STOLE HOME to put the Pack up 3-1.

Regis would not stay down for long. The Rangers scored three in the bottom of the second. Two of these runs came off of a two-run home run from Josh Newell, as Regis seized a 4-3 lead after two.

The Rangers would add to their lead in the fourth. Regis tacked on three more runs as they chased Conlin and took a 7-3 advantage into the fifth.

Down four runs, the Pack wasted no time in erasing their deficit. Dominick Bregar (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) belted his second base hit of the day to lead off the fifth.  Taylor Snyder (Jr., Elk River, Utah) followed suit with a one-bagger of his own.

With two on and nobody out, Manny Menocal (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) stepped in and swatted a triple that plated both Bregar and Snyder as the Pack closed within two. Castaneda drove in Menocal two batters later as the Pack pulled within one.

Once again, Godman knocked in Castaneda with another single. Godman's base knock knotted the game up at seven midway through the game.

The game would remain deadlocked at seven for the next five innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Regis threatened with two on and nobody out.  Both runners would advance into scoring position. However, Josh Nuernberg (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) would prevent both runners from scoring as he worked out of trouble.

In the top of the 10th, the Pack would break the tie. Francis Griffin (Sr., Oakland, Calif.) led off the inning with a single. Griffin would advance to third on a Cebulski single.

With two down, and two on, Godman stepped in for his biggest at bat of the day. Godman came through once again with his fourth hit of the day. Griffin scored as the Pack took an 8-7 lead.

In the bottom of the 10, Jorge Venegas (Jr., Las Lunas, N.M.) took over on the mound. After plunking a batter, Venegas retired the final three men he faced to close out the Rangers and earned his second save of the season.

Bregar, like Godman, has hit safely in each of the Pack's 12 games this season. He now has a 14-game hitting streak dating back to last season.

With their win, the Pack maintains its lead top the Plains Division. The Pack and Rangers led the division with 6-5 records during the non-conference schedule.

CSU-Pueblo and Regis will continue their four-game series Saturday with a double header beginning at 11 a.m. Game two of this double header is scheduled for roughly 2 p.m.
