Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. Feb. 13, 2016 — Approximately 24 hours after The Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team cruised to a 3-0 victory against Adams State University, the Pack hit a snag Saturday as they fell 9-5 to the visiting Grizzlies on a windy afternoon at Rawlings Field.
CSU-Pueblo (2-3 overall) looked sharp early. The Pack took a 1-0 advantage on a leadoff, solo homerun to left-center by senior outfielder Jordan Godman (Las Vegas, Nev.), and junior left-hander Cameron Weinberg (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) struck out four Grizzlies through the first two innings.
Adams State (1-4 overall), which benefited from nine walks issued by Pack pitching Saturday, started to take advantage of the free baserunners in the third inning, manufacturing two runs on just one hit and three walks to take a 2-1 lead.
The Grizzlies would add another run in the fourth and three in the fifth to stretch their lead to 6-1 before the Pack answered back with an unearned run in the home half of the fifth.
Godman, who finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, led off the inning with a bunt single. He advanced to second on a throwing error, and came around to score on an RBI groundout from senior first baseman Dominick Bregar (Pueblo, Colo.). The Preseason All-RMAC selection finished 2-for-4 with a pair of walks and a run scored.
The ThunderWolves had chances to climb back into the game late, but couldn't capitalize on a two-out, bases loaded opportunity in sixth. In the seventh, CSU-Pueblo stranded runners at second and third. The Pack left 11 runners on base for the game.
CSU-Pueblo trailed by as many as six runs. The Pack looked up at a 9-3 deficit heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the Pack would make it interesting.
Freshman outfielder Gilbert Sauceda (Indio, Calif.) and Bregar led off the ninth with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Sauceda came home on an RBI groundout by junior David Gunther (Albuquerque, N.M.). Bregar followed suit as he scored on the second single of the game by junior Oliver Jackson (Mission Viejo, Calif.).
CSU-Pueblo plated its fifth run on a two-out RBI double by senior Brandon Castaneda (Azuna, Calif.) that brought home Jackson. However, the Pack couldn't inch closer as the Grizzlies held on for the 9-5 final.
The Pack will look to shake off Saturday's loss, and claim their first series win of the season, when they take on Adams State Sunday in the rubber game of the three-game set. First pitch at Rawlings Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
