Pack stops Western New Mexico to post best start in school history

PUEBLO, Colo . (January 9, 2016) In a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference showdown, the Colorado State University-Pueblo women's basketball team rumbled past Western New Mexico University 71-60. With a 13-2 (8-1 RMAC) record, the Pack set school record for highest winning percentage through 15 games. With their second loss against the Pack this season,Western New Mexico fell to 6-8 (4-5 RMAC)

Freshman, Molly Rohrer (Greenwood Village, Colo.) made an impact with 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. Rohrer rejected four Mustang shots. Rohrer, the RMAC's leader in rejections now has 17 blocks in her four games.

After a slow start shooting, the Pack made an incredible 63.0 percent of their shots in the second half. CSU-Pueblo has now outscored every conference opponent in the second half this season.

 Tuileisu Anderson (So., Vancouver, Wash.) finished with 19 points and five assists. Anderson's five helpers set new career-best. She also drained three 3-pointers 

A four-minute scoring drought  for the Pack in the opening frame allowed the Mustangs to hold a 17-9 lead after one. WNMU went on a 14-4 run over the last 8:19 of the first quarter as the held they Pack to 4-of-19 from the field. Rohrer posted four points and two blocks in the first.

CSU-Pueblo erupted to begin the second quarter with a 15-3 run over the first five minutes of the second that gave the Pack a 24-20 lead with 1:48 left in the first. However, WNMU responded with seven straight points that allowed them to claim a 27-24 lead at halftime.  

Ashley Piper (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) controlled the glass with nine rebounds in the first half. Piper finished with 14 boards, which matched her career-high, and career-best five assists. 

 Lauren Heyn (Fr. Loomis, Calif.) knocked down 3-of-4 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. She had a six point, four rebound ledger at intermission. 

Rohrer rushed out of the break with eight of the Pack's first nine points. With the Pack up 39-38, Rohrer got her teammates involved. The center dished the ball out to Dee Arrieta (Sr., Puebloe West, Colo.) and Mariana Lambert (Sr., Jundiai, Brazil) for 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to helped the build the lead to 48-41. CSU-Pueblo has outscored WNMU 54-19 in the third quarter in two meetings this season.  

From the end of the third, continuing into the first three minutes of the fourth, the Pack went on a 14-0 run to extend their lead to 14 points. This run helped the Pack take down the Mustangs 71-60.

Heyn finished her night with 11 points and eight rebounds. She made 5-of-6 from the field. With a block against the Mustangs, Heyn now has a rejectionin each of her last eight games.

The Pack has scored 71 points in each of their last three games. No opponent has shot better than 40 percent against the ThunderWolves in their last 14 games. 

CSU-Pueblo's four-game homestand continues Friday, Jan. 15 when they play South Dakota School of Mines. The Pack will wrap up their homestand Jan. 16 when Black Hills State University visits Pueblo. Both games tip at 5:30 p.m.
