Second chances, Regis buzzer beater stops Pack's win streak at 10

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (January 2, 2016) – The No. 17 Colorado State University-Pueblo women's basketball team watched its longest winning streak since 1975-76 end at 10 in a 58-56 loss to the Regis University Rangers. With the game tied and 2.6 seconds on the clock, Regis (5-7, 3-3 RMAC) hit a buzzer beater to hand the Pack (10-2, 5-1 RMAC )its first loss since its season opener and its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference defeat. 

Tuileisu Anderson (So., Vancouver, Wash.) paced the Pack with 16 points. Molly Rohrer (Fr., Greenwood Village, Colo.) added 10 points and three blocksAshley Piper (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) scored 11 points and hit three 3-pointers.

Regis controlled the boards, outrebounding the Pack 47-21. The ThunderWolves have lost the battle on the glass in both defeats this season Kaylie Rader grabbed 15 boards for Regis.. The Rangers had 19 offensive rebounds.
 
After Regis sank an early three, the Pack went on a 9-0 run that lasted over 2:30. CSU-Pueblo maintained at least a four-point lead until the 3:37 minute mark in the first. 

With just over 3:30 remaining on the clock a scary moment occurred for the Pack, when Angie Moore (Jr., Katy, Texas) went down with an injury. Following Moore's exit from the game, the Pack went cold. They did not score again in the first quarter.

Regis rallied with a six-point run that forced a 14-14 tie at the end of the first. CSU-Pueblo outshot the Rangers from the field in the opening 10 minutes, 42.8 percent to 27.8 percent.

The Pack's offensive drought continued until the 7:45 mark of the second when Rohrer knocked down a big three. Moments later the freshman added another triple that put the Pack back up 20-16 with 6:42 left in the second. 

After Regis reclaimed a 22-20 lead, Jaszymn Johnson (Sr., Denver, Colo.) entered the game and made an immediate impact. Johnson blocked a Ranger shot on one end, the raced down the court for a 3-pointer that put the Pack back in front.

However, Regis responded with an 8-2 run to carry a 30-25 lead in to the half. Regis led the Pack in rebounding, 23-12, at the break.

Regis extended its lead to seven, 40-33, with 5:38 remaining in the third. The Pack responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game. 

Anderson took over in the third, scoring seven consecutive points to give the Pack a 45-44 lead with 1:29 left in the quarter. Anderson's surge gave the Pack its first lead since the end of the first. A Dee Arrieta (Sr., Pueblo West, Colo.) jumper at the buzzer put the Pack up 50-46 going into the final frame.

Arrieta drained a 3-pointer to begin the fourth to give the Pack its largest lead of the game. However, the Pack went on an eight-minute scoring drought following Arrieta's bucket that allowed Regis to take a 56-53 lead. Piper finally snapped the drought with a huge 3-pointer to tie the game at 56 with a minute left in the fourth.

With six seconds left, Rohrer rejected a Regis shot out of bounds. On the ensuing inbounds play, Regis' Bay'Lee Purdy sank a 2-pointer that gave Regis a 58-56 lead with 2.6 seconds on the clock. CSU-Pueblo had one last chance but could not get a shot in the air, as Regis snapped the Pack's win streak at 10.

CSU-Pueblo will try to begin a new winning streak Sunday when they visit Chadron State College at 1 p.m. Fans can follow along with stats, video and audio for Sunday's contest with the Eagles.

The Pack will return to Massari Arena Jan. 8-9 when they open a four-game home stand with contests against New Mexico Highlands University  and Western New Mexico University. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.
