Hit parade leads No. 16 CSU-Pueblo to doubleheader sweep of Adams State

PUEBLO, Colo. (May 2, 2015) ~ The No. 16/16 Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team closed the 2015 regular season by pounding out 29 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of Adams State University Saturday at Rawlings Field. The ThunderWolves won game one, 13-3, and game two, 8-3. It was the Pack's 10th doubleheader sweep of the season.

With the two wins, CSU-Pueblo will enter the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament with a 38-12 overall record and 28-10 mark in league games. The 28 league wins for the ThunderWolves are the most in program history. The Pack will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will play the No. 3 seed MSU Denver Roadrunners Thursday at 2 p.m. in Grand Junction, Colo.

Adams State drops to 1-9 on the season against the ThunderWolves and concludes the regular season with a 20-29 overall record, including a 16-20 mark in conference tilts. The Grizzlies will be the No. 4 seed in next week's RMAC Tournament and will face top seed and host Colorado Mesa in round one.

In Saturday's game one victory, CSU-Pueblo pounded out 17 hits en route to its 14th double-digit run total of the season. Adams State notched three runs on six hits. Neither team committed an error in the contest. The Pack stranded 11 runners on base, while the Grizzlies left seven men aboard.

Thomas Bevington (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) strung together his best outing of the season in his first start for the ThunderWolves. The right hander tossed six innings, gave up just one run on three hits, walked one and struck out three to pick up his second win of the year.

J.D. Heredia suffered the loss for the Grizzlies after giving up four runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Jordan Godman (Jr., Las Vegas, N.M.) and Tyler Landrith (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) each recorded three hits to lead the offensive attack for the Pack. In total, 11 different players notched at least one hit apiece for the home team. Mike Wagner (Sr., Golden, Colo.), Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) and Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah) each knocked in two runs. Austin Mascorro (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) paced the team with three runs scored.

The ThunderWolves played small ball to jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Godman led off the frame with an infield single. He then moved up to second when the next batter, Mascorro, worked a walk. With the No. 3-hole hitter Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) at the plate, Godman and Mascorro pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Bregar knocked in Godman with a RBI ground out and Mascorro later crossed the plate via a ground out by Wagner.

CSU-Pueblo added to its lead in the bottom of the second inning. Godman roped a single through the hole in the right side of the infield to bring in Landrith and move Lawrence Chavez (Sr., Estancia, N.M.) to third base with one out. Chavez came in to score on a RBI ground out by Mascorro, extending the Pack's lead to 4-0 after two innings of play.

The Grizzlies finally got to Bevington in the top of the fourth inning, scoring a two-out run to trim the deficit to three, at 4-1.

The ThunderWolves' trend of two-run innings continued in the fifth. With runners at first and second and one out, Menocal lined a single to center field to score Mascorro. Richins followed Menocal's base knock with a RBI double down the left field line to put the home team on top, 6-1.

The flood gates opened in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two runs already across in the inning, Richins, Landrith and Cebulski each registered RBI singles to extend the CSU-Pueblo advantage to 11-1.

Adams State managed to push two runs across in the top of the eighth inning only to see the ThunderWolves answer with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning. Chris Ramsey (Sr., Westminster, Colo.) and Daniel Vigil (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) each notched a RBI single in the frame to give the Pack the final winning margin of 13-3.

In the night cap, CSU-Pueblo tallied eight runs on 12 hits, committed no errors and left eight runners on base. The Grizzlies notched three runs on nine hits, committed one error and stranded seven runners on the bases.

Kolby Rimer (Sr., St. George, Utah) earned the win out of the bullpen for the ThunderWolves. The right hander worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Grizzlies' starter Bailey Garcia suffered the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Godman, Menocal and Landrith all had two hits apiece to pace CSU-Pueblo at the plate. Richins knocked in a game-high three runs, while Godman and Bregar added two RBIs each. Menocal and Chavez both crossed the plate twice.  

Adams State struck first in game two. Jerid Huggins knocked in a pair with a two-out double to put the Grizzlies in front 2-0 in the top of the first inning.

The Pack got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second frame. Menocal opened the inning with a triple high off the wall in left field. Richins followed with a ground out to short stop to bring in Menocal, trimming the deficit to one, at 2-1.

After a scoreless top of the third inning, CSU-Pueblo took the lead with three, two-out runs in the bottom of the frame. Richins started the rally with a two-run single through the left side of the infield. Landrith capped the scoring in the inning with a base knock into right field to drive in Menocal.

Adams State pulled to within one, at 4-3, after a RBI single by Jake Montoya in the top of the fourth inning.

The ThunderWolves answered with two tallies in the home half of the fourth. Bregar notched the big hit in the inning, roping a two-run double into the right-center field gap to plate Chavez and Godman with the fifth and sixth runs of the contest for CSU-Pueblo.

Godman pushed the Pack's lead to five runs with a two-run single to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ramsey and Chavez scored on the play give CSU-Pueblo the final winning advantage of five, at 8-3.
