CSU-Pueblo's season comes to an end in NCAA South Central Regional

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (May 17, 2015) ~ No. 4 seed Colorado State University-Pueblo jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but No. 3 seed Angelo State University rallied to defeat the ThunderWolves, 15-7, Sunday in the NCAA South Central Region Tournament at Suplizio Field.

With the loss, the Pack sees their run in the regional tournament come to an end. CSU-Pueblo finishes its ninth appearance in a regional with a 2-2 record. Angelo State advances to the South Central Region title game versus No. 6 seed St. Mary's.

The ThunderWolves conclude the 2015 season with a 41-16 record, marking the seventh time in program history they have reached the 40-win plateau. CSU-Pueblo won 28 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games which is the most in program history. Earlier this season, the Pack reached as high as No. 8 nationally.

CSU-Pueblo finished the game with seven runs on 10 hits, two errors and seven runners left on base. Angelo State notched 15 runs, 17 hits, two errors and stranded 10 base runners.

Pack reliever Doug Finley (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) suffered the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season. The ThunderWolves used five different pitchers in the contest.

Miles Gully earned the win coming out of the bullpen for the Rams to improve to 1-0 on the year. Gully tossed 5 1/3 innings shutout innings, while giving up just three hits.

At the plate, CSU-Pueblo's Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.), Beau Cebulski (Jr., Las Animas, Colo.), Lawrence Chavez (Sr., Estancia, N.M.) and Tyler Landrith (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) all tallied two hits. Cebulski scored a team-high two runs, while Chavez paced the squad with two RBIs.

Angelo State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the ThunderWolves responded with three tallies in the home half of the inning. Bregar, Cebulski and Chavez each knocked in a run in the frame.

The Rams recorded a run in the top of the third inning to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

The Pack pushed their lead to five with four runs in the home half of the third inning. Mike Wagner (Sr., Golden, Colo.) and Bregar scored on a throwing error by Rams' pitcher Graylon Brown. Chavez knocked in Cebulski with a one-out RBI double, before Landrith singled in Chavez to make the score 7-2 in favor of CSU-Pueblo.

Trailing 7-2, Angelo State tallied two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to cut the deficit to one run, at 7-6.

The Rams completed the comeback with five runs in the eighth inning and put the game away with four runs in the top of the ninth to earn the 15-7 victory.  

At the conclusion of the tournament, Bregar and Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) were tabbed to the all-tournament team. Bregar finished the four games 6-for-16 from the plate with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored. Menocal batted 4-for-14 with three RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles and one home run.
