Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 3, 2015) – The No. 8/9 Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball squad earned a doubleheader split against No. 1 Colorado Mesa University Friday at Suplizio Field. The ThunderWolves took game one, 6-5, before the Mavericks bounced back to win game two, 9-1.
The 1-1 day moves the Pack's record to 26-5 overall and 18-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests. Colorado Mesa ups its record to 29-4 overall and maintains its first-place standing in the conference with a 21-2 mark.
In game one, CSU-Pueblo managed six runs on seven hits, committed two errors and left just three runners on base. The Mavericks notched five runs on nine hits, committed one error and stranded four base runners.
Kevin Megyeri (R-So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned the win out of the bullpen for ThunderWolves to improve to 1-1 on the season. Pack starter Kolby Rimer (R-Sr., St. George, Utah went 3 1/3 innings, gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits, walked one and struck out five Mavericks. Wyndam Williams (Sr., Golden, Colo.) worked a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his sixth save of the year.
At the plate, six different players recorded at least one hit for CSU-Pueblo, including Jordan Godman (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.), who had a team-high two base knocks. Both of Godman's hits went for extra bases as he tallied a triple and a double. Godman also scored two runs and drove in one tally.
Both teams were held hitless until the third inning. In the top half of the frame, Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah) single to center field to lead off the inning for the game's first hit. After advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Beau Cebulski (Jr., Las Animas, Colo.), Richins came around to score when the next batter, Lawrence Chavez (Sr., Estancia, N.M.), reached on a throwing error. Godman followed with a triple to left field to drive in Chavez with the ThunderWolves' second run of the inning. Godman came in to score on a ground out by Austin Mascorro (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) to increase the lead to 3-0 after two-and-a-half innings.
The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning. After being held to just one hit by Rimer through the first three frames, the Mavericks finally broke through against the right hander with four runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 advantage.
The Pack quickly regained the lead with three tallies in the next half inning. Godman led off the frame with a double, before scoring on a single by Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.). Mike Wagner (Sr., Golden, Colo.) and Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) followed with back-to-back singles to plate Mascorro and Bregar, respectively, to give CSU-Pueblo a 6-4 advantage.
The Mavericks scored a run in their half of the fifth inning to trim the deficit to one, at 6-5, but that was as close as they got the rest of the way. Doug Finley (Sr., Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) and Williams shut down the top-ranked team in the country in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the 6-5 game-one win.
In the night cap, the ThunderWolves were limited to just one run on three hits. They committed one error and stranded 11 runners on base. Colorado Mesa notched nine runs on 11 hits, committed two errors and left seven men aboard.
CSU-Pueblo starter Victor Soto (Sr., Benbrook, Texas) was saddled with his first loss of the season to drop to 5-1. The senior went 3 1/3 innings, gave up five runs on seven hits, walked zero and struck out two batters.
Offensively, Richins, Chavez and Gavin Brady (Jr., Golden, Colo.) each managed one hit, while Richins drove in the only run of the game for the Pack.
The Mavericks took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, before the ThunderWolves tied the contest with a run of their own in the next half inning. With runners at first and second and nobody out, Richins delivered a single up the middle to drive in Menocal with the tying run.
Colorado Mesa regained the lead with a run in the third and then broke the contest open with six runs in the fourth inning to increase its lead to 8-1. The Mavericks closed the scoring with a run in the sixth, making the final score 9-1 in favor of the home team.
CSU-Pueblo and Colorado Mesa conclude their four-game series Saturday. The two squads will play a single game, beginning at 1 p.m.
