Box Score

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (April 26, 2015) ~ Colorado State University-Pueblo's Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) tied the game with a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning, but a walk-off long ball in the bottom of the 10th propelled New Mexico Highlands University to an 8-7 win over the No. 11/13 ThunderWolves Sunday at Brandt Fields.

With the loss, the Pack split the four-game weekend series with the Cowboys and fall to 35-11 overall and 25-9 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests. New Mexico Highlands improves to 19-23 on the season, including a 13-19 mark in league games.

The ThunderWolves finished the game with seven runs on 10 hits, they committed four errors and left 10 runners on base. The Cowboys notched eight runs on 13 hits, they did not commit an error and they stranded 13 runners aboard.

CSU-Pueblo reliever Doug Finley (Sr., Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) was pegged with the loss, but that was not indicative of how the right hander pitched. Finley came on in relief in the seventh and allowed just one run on one hit in 3 1/3 innings, while walking zero and striking out six. The loss drops Finley to 3-2 on the season.

Menocal, Austin Mascorro (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) and Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah) each had two hits apiece to lead the ThunderWolves offensively. Menocal had four RBIs in the contest, three of which came off of his third home run of the season. Mascorro scored a game-high three runs.

Menocal put the Pack on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, driving in Mascorro with a RBI single to give the visitors the early 1-0 advantage.

The Cowboys answered with two runs in the home half of the first and one more in the second inning to take a 3-1 advantage into the third frame.

CSU-Pueblo quickly regained the lead with three runs in the top of the third. Mascorro scored via a balk to start the scoring. Two batters later, Richins knocked in Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) with a run-scoring single to tie the score at 3-3. Menocal capped the scoring in the frame, racing home from third on a wild pitch to put the ThunderWolves back in front, 4-3.

The score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the fifth inning. Highlands struck for four runs in the frame to jump back into the lead, at 7-4.

The Pack continued to trail by three heading into the top of the ninth inning. The first two batters reached, but back-to-back fly outs brought Menocal to the plate with CSU-Pueblo down to its final out. The junior worked the count to 2-2 before belting a game-tying three-run home run over the left field wall.

A scoreless bottom of the ninth inning by Finley sent the game into extra innings. After the ThunderWolves were held to no runs in the top of the 10th, Morgan McCasland ended the game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the inning to give Highlands the 8-7 victory.

CSU-Pueblo concludes the regular season with a four-game home series versus Adams State University at Rawlings Field. The series gets under way Friday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
