ThunderWolves split Saturday doubleheader at Highlands

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (April 25, 2015) ~ The No. 11/13 Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball squad split a twin bill on the road Saturday against New Mexico Highlands at Brandt Fields, winning game one, 3-1, before falling in game two, 5-1.

With the one win and one loss, the ThunderWolves move to 35-10 overall and 25-8 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. The game-two loss snaps the Pack's four-game winning streak. The Cowboys' record now stands at 18-23 overall and 12-19 in league tilts.

In game one, CSU-Pueblo managed three runs on seven hits, while Highlands recorded 11 hits, but was only able to tally one run. Neither team committed an error. The ThunderWolves left five runners on base, while the home team stranded 10 men aboard.

CSU-Pueblo starter Victor Soto (Sr., Benbrook, Texas) went 4 1/3 innings, gave up eight hits and just one run en route to his team-leading eighth win of the season. Wyndam Williams (Sr., Golden, Colo.) worked a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his conference-best ninth save.

Highlands' Avery Brandon was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) led the Pack with two hits in the contest. Tyler Landrith (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) launched his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning. Austin Mascorro (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) and Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah) knocked in a run apiece.

Both starters pitched well through the first three innings, holding the opposition to no runs heading into the fourth frame.

The Cowboys ended the scoreless contest with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Pack answered back with two runs in the next half inning. Landrith led off the frame with a solo home run to left field, before Mascorro delivered a one-out RBI single to push CSU-Pueblo in front, 2-1.

Highlands threatened to score in the home half of the fifth inning, but ThunderWolves' reliever Doug Finley (Sr., Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) worked out of a one-out bases loaded jam to keep the lead intact.

The Pack added an insurance run in the sixth inning courtesy of a RBI by Richins and Williams closed the door in the seventh to preserve the win.

In game two, the CSU-Pueblo offense was stymied as it mustered just one run on three hits and left six runners on base. Highlands tallied five runs on eight hits and stranded five runners on base. Once again, both teams played error-free baseball.

ThunderWolves' starter Jesse Bristow (Sr., Heber, Utah) suffered the loss, while his counterpart Anthony Badalucco picked up the victory.

Mascorro, Mike Wagner (Sr., Golden, Colo.) and Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) had one hit apiece to lead the Pack. Bregar drove in the lone run of the contest for the visitors.

The Cowboys scored all of their runs in the first two innings off of Bristow. CSU-Pueblo right hander Thomas Bevington (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) came on in relief of Bristow and held Highlands scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Despite Bevington's strong relief outing, the ThunderWolves' offense wasn't able to climb back in the game as Bregar's RBI ground out in the sixth inning was all they could put in the run column.

CSU-Pueblo concludes its four-game series against Highlands Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
