Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. (April 24, 2015) ~ The No. 11/13 Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team opened its four-game series at New Mexico Highlands University with a 10-3 win Friday at Brandt Field. Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) tallied two hits for the ThunderWolves, including a two-run home run for his fourth long ball of the season.
With the win, the Pack improve to 34-9 overall and 24-7 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. They have won three games in a row overall and four in a row versus Highlands. The Cowboys fall to 17-22 overall, including an 11-18 mark in league games.
CSU-Pueblo recorded 10 runs on 13 hits, committed one error and left 11 men on base. It is the ThunderWolves' 13th game this season in which they have reached double digits in runs scored. The Cowboys managed three runs on nine hits, they committed three errors and also left 11 runners aboard.
Zac Wittmus (Sr., Brighton, Colo.) was solid on the hill once again for Pack head coach Stan Sanchez. Wittmus improved to 7-1 on the season after tossing 6.0 innings and giving up just one run on five hits. The right hander struck out two and walked one.
Cowboys' starter Phil Trujillo was dealt the loss after giving up six runs on five hits, while walking six in five innings of work.
Bregar was one of five CSU-Pueblo batters to record two hits, joining Austin Mascorro (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.), Mike Wagner (Sr., Golden, Colo.), Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah) and Tyler Landrith (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.). Mascorro scored two runs, while Wagner and Richins crossed the plate three times each. Landrith and Bregar both knocked in three runs.
The Pack wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. With one out in the top of the first inning, Bregar delivered a RBI single to right center field to plate Jordan Godman (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) with the first run of the game.
In the top of the second inning, Lawrence Chavez (Sr., Estancia, N.M.) drove in Richins with a sacrifice fly out to extend the CSU-Pueblo lead to 2-0.
The ThunderWolves added to their lead in the next inning. Beau Cebulski (Jr., Las Animas, Colo.) chased home Mascorro and Wagner with a two-out single to push their advantage to 4-0.
Highlands scored a run in the home half of the third inning to trim the deficit to three, at 4-1.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Pack got back in the scoring column in the top of the fifth frame. Landrith singled with the bases loaded to bring home a pair of runs. Richins and Wagner scored on the play, giving CSU-Pueblo a 6-1 lead.
The ThunderWolves continued to pour it on in the sixth inning, tallying three more runs. After a leadoff double by Mascorro, Bregar ripped a two-run home run down the right field line. Later in the inning, Landrith pushed the score to 9-1 with another RBI single.
The Cowboys tallied their second run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning only to see the Pack answer with a run of their own off of a Richins' single in the next half inning.
Highlands scored one more run in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score 10-3 in favor of No. 11/13-ranked CSU-Pueblo.
The ThunderWolves and Cowboys continue their series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
