No. 13/14 CSU-Pueblo splits Sunday doubleheader against Regis

DENVER, Colo. (April 19, 2015) ~ After weather delayed the start of the series by two days, the Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team returned to the diamond Sunday against Regis University. The ThunderWolves and Rangers split a doubleheader with the Pack winning game one, 9-1, and Regis taking game two, 6-2.

The 1-1 day moves CSU-Pueblo's overall record to 31-9 and its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference ledger to 21-7. Regis now stands at 16-23 overall, including a 10-18 mark in league action.

In game one, the ThunderWolves amassed nine runs on 12 hits, committed no errors and stranded nine runners on base. The Rangers had one run on 10 hits, committed three errors and left eight men aboard.

CSU-Pueblo's Zac Wittmus (Sr., Brighton, Colo.) earned the win to improve to 6-1 on the season. The right hander went six innings, gave up one run on seven hits, walked one and struck out two. Brad Thoutt was saddled with the loss to fall to 3-3 on the year.

Mike Wagner (Sr., Golden, Colo.) tied with Regis' John Flint with a game-high three hits. Gavin Brady (Jr., Golden, Colo.) tallied two hits for the Pack. Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) drove in a game-high three runs. Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah) notched a contest-best two runs scored.

CSU-Pueblo jumped out to an early lead in its first at-bat of the contest. Bregar drove in a run on a ground out to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

The Rangers evened the contest at one apiece with a run in the home half of the third inning.

The ThunderWolves regained the lead in the next half inning, tallying two runs via wild pitches.

CSU-Pueblo broke the game open with five runs in the top of the sixth frame. Lawrence Chavez (Sr., Estancia, N.M.), Bregar and Wagner each had RBI hits in the inning to extend the ThunderWolves' advantage to 8-1.

A sacrifice fly out by Tyler Landrith (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) in the top of the ninth inning capped the scoring for the Pack and gave them a 9-1 win.

In game two, both teams notched six hits, while CSU-Pueblo had one error to the home team's zero.

Kolby Rimer (Sr., St. George, Utah) suffered his first loss of the season to drop to 3-1. Matt Heibult earned the victory for the Rangers to improve to 6-2.

Six different players had one hit apiece for the ThunderWolves, including Austin Mascorro (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) who also drove in a run and scored a run.

Regis scored three runs in the bottom of the first and one more in the second to take a 4-0 lead heading to the third inning.

CSU-Pueblo climbed back in the contest with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Mascorro drove in a Jordan Godman (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) with a double and later came around to score on a wild pitch.

The Rangers answered with two runs in their half of the third frame to extend the score to the final winning margin of 6-2.

The ThunderWolves and Rangers return to action Monday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
