ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 17, 2015 – Michael Liptak) - In an overtime thriller, the Colorado State University-Pueblo women's lacrosse team fell 13-12 to Adams State University Friday evening in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest. Freshman Maxine Bartholomew (M, Elk Grove, Calif.) tied for a team high in goals with two, but had the most important of the match, scoring with one second on the clock to send it to overtime, before the ThunderWolves eventually fell in extra-time.
With the loss, the Pack drop to 4-10 and 1-4 in the RMAC. The Grizzlies earn their first win of the season and improve to 1-10 (1-5 RMAC).
Allye Webb (Fr., M, Colorado Springs, Colo.), Rachael Welzin (Fr., M, Farmington, Minn.), Daniella Calvo (Fr., D, Spring, Texas.) and Bartholomew all had two goals apiece to pace CSU-Pueblo. Eight ThunderWolves tallied a at least one goal. Webb improved her team best in goals to 27, while Welzin surpassed the 20-goal mark.
ASU's Kendra Cheda had a contest-high four goals, while Samantha Hammer earned a hat trick herself with three.
The Pack owned the advantage in shots, 32-28. In their first win of the season, the Grizzlies outdueled the ThunderWolves 17-13 in ground balls and 16-12 in draw controls.
CSU-Pueblo jumped on the Grizzlies right out of the gate, earning a 2-0 lead off of goals from Welzin and Bartholomew in the first 5:56 of game play. Jessica Hammer eventually broke the hold to cut the deficit to one, at 2-1. Shortly after Hammer's goal, Webb answered with a marker of her own that started another 2-0 run and gave the visitors a 4-1 lead with 12:51 remaining in the first frame.
Three straight tallies by the Grizzlies tied the game at 4-4 with 9:08 to go before intermission. The ThunderWolves answered the call again, outscoring Adams State 4-1 to close the first-half for an 8-5 advantage at the break.
The Grizzlies came roaring out of halftime, opening on a 4-0 spurt the first 15:40 of game-action to take their first lead of the match, at 9-8. Two-and-a-half minutes later Calvo broke ASU's run with her second goal of the contest to re-tie the game 9-9.
From there both teams continued to trade points the rest of the way, with the ThunderWolves having to come back each time. Trailing 11-10 with 2:15 in the game, Tori Gray (Fr., M, Parker, Colo.) reached the back of the net 14 seconds later to tie it with 2:01 remaining.
The squads continued to battle the rest of the way. Hammer scored a man-up goal with 20 seconds remaining for a 12-11 advantage. CSU-Pueblo had one last gasp and Bartholomew delivered, scoring with one second remaining to send the match to extra time.
Hammer netted her third and final goal 1:23 into the overtime period to send the Grizzlies off with their first win of the season, 13-12 over the ThunderWolves.
Up next, the Pack remain on the road, traveling to Fort Lewis College for a Sunday-afternoon affair at 1 p.m.
