PUEBLO, Colo. (April 1, 2015 - by Michael Liptak) - In its second-to-last home contest of the season, the Colorado State University-Pueblo women's lacrosse team fell to in-state opponent Colorado College, 15-4, at the Art and Lorraine Lacrosse Complex Wednesday.
The loss snaps the ThunderWolves two-game winning streak and they fall to 3-8 on the season. The Tigers surpass the .500 mark and improve to 7-6 with four matches to go in the regular season.
Freshman Allye Webb (M, Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the way for the Pack, as she netted two goals in the contest. While doing so, she surpassed the 20-goal mark on the year and extended her team-leading total to 21. Alix Zierden (Fr., M, Elk River, Minn.) and Rachael Welzin (Fr., M, Farmington, Minn.) each reached the back of the net once.
The ThunderWolves' Daniella Calvo (Fr., D, Spring, Texas) led the team with four ground balls. Welzin tied with the Tigers' Sadie Cole with a game-high three caused turnovers.
In goal, Nicole Burkhauser (Fr., Auburn, Wash.) notched her second-highest save total of the season with 14.
Four Tigers had three or more tallies. Sadie Cole had a game-high four goals and added one assist, while Iris Rayburn, Mary Taussig, and Colleen Orr were the other three to reach the mark.
As a team, the Pack were outdueled 21-19 in the ground-ball battle and outshot 36-12. The Tigers also had the advantage in draw controls, 18-3, and turned the ball over 16 times to CSU-Pueblo's 25.
The first 14:41 of the match the squads traded two goals apiece. Colorado College jumped up 1-0 21 seconds into the contest, but Webb responded shortly after to tie it at 1-1. Cole tallied her second goal of the game less than a minute later to help the Tigers regain the lead. Welzin reached the back of the net to tie it up at 2-2 with 15:29 remaining in the first frame.
The Tigers roared back with a 3-0 run to move in front 5-2. Webb snapped the run with her second goal of the contest to cut the deficit to two, at 5-3, with 4:57 to go before intermission. Playing a man up, Colorado College took advantage and scored 1:06 left before the break to carry a 6-3 advantage into halftime.
The momentum carried over out of halftime, as the Tigers scored the period's first two goals to lead 8-3 with 24:19 left in the game. Zierden contributed her lone goal with 15:40 to go to make it 8-4, but it was ultimately the Pack's last score of contest. Colorado College held the home team scoreless the rest of the way and finished the match on a 7-0 run for a final score 15-4.
Up next, the ThunderWolves host their final home game of the season Friday when they welcome Adams State University to the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Lacrosse Complex. First draw is set for 7 p.m.
