Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. (March 7, 2015) ~ Led by strong starts from pitchers Kolby Rimer (R-Sr., St. George, Utah) and Victor Soto (Sr., Benbrook, Texas), the Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep of visiting New Mexico Highlands University Saturday at Rawlings Field. The ThunderWolves won game one, 2-0, behind a complete-game shutout from Rimer and followed it with a 9-1 victory in game two.
With the two wins, CSU-Pueblo improves to 12-3 overall on the year and 4-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests. The Cowboys fall to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in league tilts.
Rimer was the story of game one as the right hander threw a complete-game, five-hit shutout to earn his first win of the season. Rimer struck out four batters and walked zero. It is the first complete-game shutout for the ThunderWolves since Jesse Bristow (Sr., Heber, Utah) went the distance in a four-hit shutout of Regis University March 21, 2014.
Offensively, the Pack recorded nine hits, which included three base knocks apiece from Lawrence Chavez (Sr., Estancia, N.M.) and Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah).
CSU-Pueblo tallied single runs in the third and sixth innings to account for the only tallies in the contest. Jordan Godman delivered a run-scoring double in the third inning, while Chavez notched a RBI single in the sixth to give Rimer all the run support that he needed.
In game two, Soto went 4.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits and striking out a season-high nine batters. The senior improves to 3-0 on the year.
Richins pounded out three more hits in game two to finish the day a perfect 6-for-6 from the plate. Francis Griffin (Jr., Oakland, Calif.) notched a pinch-hit home run. Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Shane Fessel (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) knocked in three and two RBIs, respectively. The ThunderWolves outhit the visitors, 10-3.
Highlands scored their only run of the game on a home run by Joe Cervantes in the top of the second inning to give them a 1-0 lead. The advantage was short lived as the Pack knotted the game in the bottom half of inning at 1-1.
The Pack took the lead in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a RBI single by Bregar.
CSU-Pueblo added to its lead with four runs in the fourth inning. Bregar had the key hit in the inning, driving home two runs with a two out single to push the ThunderWolves' lead to five, at 6-1.
In the fifth inning, Fessel delivered a two-run single to extend the home team's advantage to 8-1. Griffin capped the day with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to give CSU-Pueblo its final winning margin of 9-1.
The ThunderWolves and Cowboys close out their four-game series Sunday with a single game beginning at noon.
