Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, Colo. (March 28, 2015) ~ The No. 11/14 Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team stayed red-hot Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Colorado Christian University at All-Star Park. The ThunderWolves took game one, 12-11, before using a seven-run sixth inning to propel them to an 11-4 win in game two. The two wins extend the Pack's winning streak to 13 games, their longest since winning 14 straight in 2006.
With the wins, CSU-Pueblo improves to 23-3 overall on the season and 15-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. The Cougars drop to 10-18 on the season, including a 3-15 mark in league play.
In game one, the ThunderWolves worked across 12 runs on 16 hits, they committed two errors and left 14 men on base. The Cougars tallied 11 runs on 18 hits, but were victimized by four errors and 14 runners left aboard.
CSU-Pueblo starter Zac Wittmus (Sr., Brighton, Colo.) earned the win to improve to 4-0 on the season. The right hander went five innings, gave up five runs (two earned) on eight hits, struck out three and walked two. Doug Finley (Sr., Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) picked up his first save of the season after tossing two innings of one-run baseball.
Six different players tallied multiple hits for the Pack, including Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) who had three hits, two of which went for home runs. The first baseman went 3-for-4 from the dish with four RBIs and three runs scored. Bregar becomes the first Pack player to hit two home runs in a game since Scott Hoyt did so against Adams State May 8, 2014. Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) and Beau Cebulski (Jr., Las Animas, Colo.) matched Bregar with three hits each.
The ThunderWolves jumped out to an early lead after the first two innings. Menocal singled home a run in the top of the first inning. CSU-Pueblo recorded three more runs in the second frame to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Cougars worked a run across in the bottom of the second inning only to see the Pack match the run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly out by Jordan Godman (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.).
A two-spot in the home half of the third inning by Colorado Christian trimmed the deficit to 5-3 heading to the fourth frame.
Cebulski delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to push the ThunderWolves' advantage back to three, at 6-3.
CSU-Pueblo added to its lead in the next inning thanks to Bregar's first home run of the game, a two-run shot to left field, and a sacrifice fly out by Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah).
Two runs in the home half of the fifth inning pulled the Cougars to within four, at 9-5.
After a scoreless sixth frame, the Pack seemingly put the game away with three runs in their half of the seventh inning. Bregar pulled a solo home run over the right-field fence for his second long ball of the game and third of the season. Three batters later, Richins ripped a two-run triple to center field to score Mike Wagner (Sr., Golden, Colo.) and Menocal with the 11th and 12th runs of the game for CSU-Pueblo.
Colorado Christian clawed its way back in to the game with a run in the seventh inning, four in the eighth and one more in the ninth, but it was not quite enough as the ThunderWolves held on for the 12-11 victory.
In game two, CSU-Pueblo tallied 11 runs on 13 hits, committed three errors and left 10 runners on base. The Cougars pushed across four runs on 11 base knocks, they committed one error and stranded 11 base runners.
Pack starter Kolby Rimer (Sr., St. George, Utah) gave up four runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out four in five innings of work to pick up his third win of the season.
Godman and Lawrence Chavez (Sr., Estancia, N.M.) both recorded three hits to lead the ThunderWolves, while Menocal drove in a game-high four runs.
A run in the first inning and three more in the second gave Colorado Christian a 4-0 lead heading into the third inning.
The Pack answered with four runs in the top of the third frame to even the score at 4-4. Godman, Bregar, Menocal and Richins knocked in a run each in the inning.
The score remained knotted at four until the top of the sixth inning. Godman broke the tie with a RBI single two batters into the inning. Godman came around to score on a single into left field by Bregar. After a Wagner walk loaded the bases, Menocal promptly cleared them with a three-run double. Chavez capped the seven-run inning with a sacrifice fly out to give the ThunderWolves the final winning margin of 11-4.
CSU-Pueblo and Colorado Christian conclude their four-game series Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
