COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 26, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's and women's tennis teams earned nonconference victories against Colorado College Thursday. The men won 8-1, while the women picked up a 7-2 victory.
The men's (3-10) team snapped an eight-match losing streak by winning all the singles matches and two of the three doubles battles. Four players recorded two wins for the ThunderWolves, while all the singles matches were decided in straight sets.
Senior Gael Reitter (Choisy-le-Roi, France) won 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 singles and with senior Marcelo Chaparro (Bogotá, Colombia) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-3. Freshman Luke Lipinski (Austin, Texas) won 6-3 and 6-2 at No. 3 singles to go 2-0 after the close 9-8 (10-6) doubles battle with fellow freshman Steven Alcala (Pueblo, Colo.). Chaparro won 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Alcala picked up a win at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4.
On the women's side, the Pack moved to 3-5 this season and recorded their first win since Feb. 14. The ThunderWolves competed in just two matches since then and went 0-2 versus Division I Air Force Academy and No. 16 in Division II, St. Mary's University (Texas).
Three women's players earned a sweep on the day, as junior Mariana Hosomi (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won at No. 2 singles 6-1 and 6-4 before picking up the victory at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, with partner Teresa Haro (Jr., Monument, Colo.). Sophomore Sarah Coy (Pueblo West, Colo.) won her match at No. 4 singles 6-3 and 6-4, while the doubles contest with junior Toni Alvarez (Pueblo, Colo.) was decided by an 8-3 margin. Haro picked up a win at No. 6 singles, but needed three sets after losing the first 7-5. She battled back to win set number two 6-3 and capped the match with a 6-4 win.
The ThunderWolves men's and women's teams will host Cameron University March 30 at 10 a.m. at Pueblo City Park, but first for the women is a 2 p.m. match up against Holy Names University Friday at 2 p.m. (orgininally listed at 1 p.m.).
