No. 13 CSU-Pueblo downs MSU Denver 8-5 for 11th consecutive victory

PUEBLO, Colo. (March 22, 2015) ~ The No. 13 Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Metro State University of Denver with an 8-5 win Sunday at Rawlings Field. The victory extends the ThunderWolves winning streak to 11 games, marking their longest stretch of wins since 2006.

CSU-Pueblo improves to 21-3 overall and 13-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The 21-3 mark is the program's best start to a season since 2004. In addition to the 11-game overall winning streak, the victory also extends the ThunderWolves winning streak at home versus the Roadrunners to 16 games. MSU Denver falls to 9-12 on the season and 4-8 in conference contests.

For the ThunderWolves, they scored eight runs on 11 hits, committed no errors and left six runners on base. The Roadrunners tallied five runs on eight hits, they committed one error and stranded nine base runners.

CSU-Pueblo starter Daniel Tessone (Jr., La Habra, Calif.) earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. The right hander went 5 2/3 innings, gave up three runs on three hits, walked five and struck out three batters.

Nick Hammett drew the loss for MSU Denver to fall to 2-4 on the season. Hammett tossed three innings and gave up five runs on six hits, walked one and struck out three.

Eight of the nine players in the ThunderWolves' lineup recorded at least one hit on the day. Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.), Mike Wagner (Sr., Golden, Colo.) Gavin Brady (Jr., Golden, Colo.) each had two hits. Wagner led all players with three RBIs, while Brady and Beau Cebulski (Jr., Las Animas, Colo.) drove in two runs each.

The Pack jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. With one out and Bregar at second base, Wagner belted a deep fly off the wall in dead center field. Bregar came around to score on the hit and Wagner ended up at third with his fourth triple of the season.

Another triple got the ThunderWolves started in the second inning as Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah) ripped a three bagger into the gap in right-center field to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Cebulski drove in Richins with a sacrifice fly to center field to extend the CSU-Pueblo lead to 2-0.

The Roadrunners evened the contest at 2-2 in the top of the third inning thanks to a bad-hop inside the park home run by Chris Spirek.

The ThunderWolves quickly regained the lead in their half of the third inning. With one out and runners at second and third, Wagner ripped a single through the right side of the infield to score Austin Mascorro (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) and Bregar with the Pack's third and fourth runs of the contest.

MSU Denver cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the fourth inning. The Roadrunners threatened for more but Tessone was able to strand runners at second and third base thanks to a pop out and strike out.

CSU-Pueblo answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Brady led off the frame with a looping double down the left field line. Cebulski followed with a RBI single through the left side to score Brady, extending the Pack's lead to 5-3.

After a pair of scoreless innings, the Pack added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) delivered a RBI single through the right side with the bases loaded for the first run of the frame. Two batters later, Brady blooped a single into shallow left field to plate Wagner and Menocal with the seventh and eighth runs of the game for the ThunderWolves.

The Roadrunners worked a run across in both the eighth and the ninth innings, but it was not enough as the Pack earned their 21st victory of the season by a final score of 8-5.

The ThunderWolves return to the diamond next weekend in Lakewood, Colo. for a four-game series against Colorado Christian University. The two squads will play a doubleheader on both Saturday and Sunday.
