Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 15, 2015) ~ The No. 17 Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team extended its winning streak to a season-best seven games Sunday, downing Adams State University, 4-1, at ASU Baseball Field.
With the win, the ThunderWolves completed their second series sweep of the season and first four-game sweep since taking four contests from Metro State University of Denver April 17-19 of last season. The Pack improve to 17-3 overall and 9-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. The 17-3 mark is their best start to a season since the 2004 squad opened the year 18-1-1. CSU-Pueblo's seven-game winning streak is its longest since winning eight in a row April 28-May 11, 2013.
The loss drops Adams State to 6-12 on the year, including a 3-5 mark in RMAC tilts.
Austyn Garcia (Fr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) picked up the win out of the bullpen for the ThunderWolves after tossing 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Wyndam Williams (Sr., Golden, Colo.) pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the season.
Both teams finished the contest with nine hits, but the Grizzlies committed two errors and left 11 men on base.
The ThunderWolves' No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters went a combined 6-for-11 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Austin Mascorro (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.), Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Mike Wagner (Sr., Golden, Colo.) recorded two hits apiece, with Wagner driving in a contest-best two runs.
CSU-Pueblo got on the scoreboard first, tallying a solo run in the top half of the second inning. Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) led off the frame with a base knock and came around to score when the next batter, Lawrence Chavez (Sr., Estancia, N.M.), lined a double down the leftfield line.
In the third inning, Bregar stroked a one-out double to the right centerfield gap. Wagner chased home Bregar with a single to give the Pack a 2-0 advantage after 2.5 innings of play.
The Grizzlies cut the deficit in half with their only run of the game in their half of the third inning.
Leading 2-1, CSU-Pueblo added to its advantage in the fifth inning. With runners at second and third base with nobody out, Bregar delivered a single, scoring Jordan Godman (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.). The next batter, Wagner, bounced into a fielder's choice, allowing Mascorro to score from third base to extend the visitor's lead to 4-1.
The ThunderWolves' bullpen made the three-run edge stand, giving up five hits in the final five innings and stranding four base runners. Williams worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning to preserve the series sweep for the Pack.
CSU-Pueblo returns home this weekend, playing host to MSU Denver at Rawlings Field. The four-game series is set to get under way Friday at 6:00 p.m.
