Box Score 2 ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 14, 2015) ~ The No. 17-ranked Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team continued its hot play Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from Adams State University at ASU Baseball Field. The ThunderWolves won game one, 4-2, before rolling to a 13-1 game-two victory.
With the wins, CSU-Pueblo has now recorded victories in six consecutive contests and 12 out of its last 13 games. The ThunderWolves improve to 16-3 overall and 8-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests. The 16-3 mark is the best 19-game start for the program since the 2004 squad opened the year 17-1-1. Adams State drops to 6-11 and 3-4 in league contests.
Kolby Rimer (R-Sr., St. George, Utah) earned the win in game for the Pack in game one, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out three and walking three. The redshirt senior improves to 2-0 on the year.
Tyler Rich (Jr., Colton, Calif.) threw a perfect 1.2 innings in relief to earn his first save of the year.
Six different players recorded one hit apiece for the Pack. Jordan Godman (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) had one of those hits and also finished with three runs scored and three stolen bases. Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Austin Mascorro (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) tallied a hit and two RBIs each.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first two frames, before the ThunderWolves broke through with the game's first run in the top of the third inning. Godman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and after stealing second and moving to third on a ground out, the centerfielder scored on a sacrifice fly out by Bregar.
The Grizzlies evened the contest with a run in the bottom of the third inning.
The score remained tied at one until the top of the fifth frame when the Pack took the lead with a pair of tallies. With runners at second and third and one out, Mascorro singled up the middle to score Beau Cebulski (Jr., Las Animas, Colo.) and Godman, making the score 3-1 in favor of the visitors.
Adams State pulled to within 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as they got the rest of the way.
CSU-Pueblo tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh courtesy of a Bregar sacrifice fly and Rich closed the door in the bottom of the frame to seal the 4-2 victory.
Victor Soto (Sr., Benbrook, Texas) was brilliant in game two, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The senior earned the win to improve to 4-0 on the season. Soto went six innings, allowed one run on three hits and struck out one batter.
Offensively, the Pack amassed 19 hits, including five from Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah). The senior went 5-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Four more players had three hits apiece. Gavin Brady (Jr., Golden, Colo.) launched his first home run of the season.
The ThunderWolves opened game two with runs in each of the first four innings. In the top of the first, Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) drove home Mascorro with a two-out single to give the Pack a 1-0 advantage.
A sacrifice fly out by Mascorro and an RBI double by Bregar extended the CSU-Pueblo lead to 3-0 through an inning and a half of play.
In the third inning, Richins delivered a two-RBI single and later came around to score on a base knock by Daniel Vigil (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) to give the ThunderWolves a 6-0 advantage through 2.5 innings.
The Pack tacked on one run in the fourth inning thanks to a RBI single from Lawrence Chavez (Sr., Estancia, N.M.).
After being held scoreless in the fifth inning, the ThunderWolves extended their lead to 9-0 in the top of the sixth frame. Richins tripled to left centerfield, scoring Tyler Landrith (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.). Shane Fessel (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) followed with an RBI base knock to give CSU-Pueblo a 9-0 advantage.
While the ThunderWolves' offense was busy pouring in runs, Soto was mowing through the Grizzlies' lineup. The senior didn't allow a run or a hit until the bottom of the sixth when Adams State was able to work their only run of the game across the plate.
The Pack added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Brady delivered the big blow in the frame, launching a three-run home run over the right centerfield wall to give CSU-Pueblo the final winning margin of 13-1.
The ThunderWolves go for the series sweep Sunday in the finale of the four-game set. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
