Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. (February 7, 2015) ~ After dropping the first game of the doubleheader, 7-6 (8 innings), the Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team bounced back in a big way with a 15-7 game-two victory over Montana State University Billings Saturday at Rawlings Field.
The doubleheader split moves the ThunderWolves' record to 2-1 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets' season mark stands at 1-2.
In game one, the Pack jumped out to a 3-0 advantage thanks to a run in the first inning and two in the second. Jordan Godman (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) singled to lead off the bottom of the first and later scored on a balk. In the second frame, Shane Richins (Sr., Heber, Utah) delivered a sacrifice fly, driving in Shane Fessel (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) with the game's second run. Later in the inning, Godman scored his second run of the game on an RBI single by Austin Mascorro (Oxnard, Calif.).
The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the third inning. The visitors knotted the contest at 3-3 on a run-scoring double in the fifth inning by Brody Miller.
CSU-Pueblo broke the tie with three runs in its half of the sixth inning. With one out, Godman laced a double down the right-field line, plating Chris Ramsey (Sr., Westminster, Colo.) and Lawrence Chavez (OF, Sr., Estancia, N.M.). Mascorro followed with a RBI single to knock in Godman, giving the Pack a 6-3 lead.
Down to their final three outs, the Yellow Jackets mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Miller launced a game-tying three-run homerun to right centerfield.
The Pack had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh inning, but MSU Billings' pitcher Bryon Baker was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam, sending the game into extra innings.
The Yellow Jackets pushed across the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth inning, scoring an unearned tally to take an 8-7 lead.
CSU-Pueblo managed a two-out hit by Dominick Bregar (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) in the bottom of the inning, but he was left stranded at first as MSU Billings held on for the 8-7 victory.
Kevin Megyeri (R-So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) took the loss for the ThunderWolves, while Baker earned the win for the Yellow Jackets. Cody Cooper closed the door for the save.
CSU-Pueblo outhit the visitors, 10-7, in game one. Godman went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI to lead the ThunderWolves.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two, but that lead was short lived as the Pack answered with six runs in their half of the first inning. Bregar, Mike Wagner (Golden, Colo.), Manny Menocal (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) and Chavez each tallied at least one RBI in the inning as CSU-Pueblo sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
The ThunderWolves' lead disappeared in the third inning as MSU Billings pushed five runs across to go on top, 7-6.
The Pack did one better in the bottom half of the third inning, tallying six runs in the frame. Mascorro delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded. Two batters later, Wagner launched his first homerun of the season, a grand slam to right field, giving CSU-Pueblo a 12-7 advantage.
The ThunderWolves tallied their final three runs of the game in the fourth inning. Mascorro recorded another RBI single and Fessel drove in two with a double, giving CSU-Pueblo what ended up being the final score of 15-7.
Thomas Bevington (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first win of the season. Yellow Jackets' starter Jake Campeau was saddled with the loss after surrendering eight runs on eight hits.
Both teams finished the game with 14 hits. Wagner was the top offensive performer for the Pack, going 4-of-5 with two runs and six RBI. Fessel and Mascorro chipped in with three RBI apiece.
The ThunderWolves and Yellow Jackets conclude their weekend series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Rawlings Field.
