GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Apr. 17, 2014) — Thanks to three convincing on-the-court wins and a pair of victories by default, the Colorado State University-Pueblo women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship Tournament with a 5-2 opening-round victory over Metro State University on Friday morning here at Colorado Mesa University's Elliott Tennis Center.
The third-seeded ThunderWolves had also defeated the sixth-seeded Roadrunners by a 7-2 score in Billings, Mont. a fortnight ago and are now 8-11 overall this season, including a 6-6 spring mark. They will now play No. 2 seed Western New Mexico in a Friday afternoon (2 p.m. semifinal match).
The ThunderWolves got out to a 2-1 lead through the doubles play as Gia Montoya (So., Pueblo, Colo.) and Brooke Trevithick (So., Pueblo, Colo.) scored an 8-2 win over Whitney Vaswig and Kaitlyn Miller in the No. 2 position. The Pack also claimed a No. 3 doubles win as Brittani Trevithick (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Teresa Haro (So., Monument, Colo.) were unopposed.
In the singles action, Haro claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Becca Medina at No. 5 while Sarah Coy (Fr., Pueblo West, Colo.) scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over Whitney Vaswig at the No. 3 position. Brittani Trevithick was unopposed at the No. 6 spot.
Brooke Trevithick was leading her No. 4 singles match 6-3, 2-0 when it was stopped because of the clinch.
