GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Apr. 17, 2014) — The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team clinched the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's regular season championship on Thursday as they posted a 9-0 win over visiting Colorado State University-Pueblo at the Elliott Tennis Center.
Pack No. 1 singles player Toni Alvarez (So., Pueblo, Colo.) fared the best for the ThunderWolves as she posted a 6-2 second set win over Natalie Martin to force a tie-breaker, which went Martin's way by a 10-6 score.
The Mavericks, who will host the RMAC Tournament on Friday and Saturday, finished the regular season with a 15-8 overall mark and went 5-0 in RMAC play to earn the No. 1 seed. The ThunderWolves fell to 7-11 overall and to 2-3 in RMAC play, finishing in a 3-way tie for third place in the RMAC standings with Colorado Christian and Montana State-Billings.
The Pack won complicated tie-breaking procedures to earn the No. 3 seed, which means they will face sixth-seeded Metro State in the opening round at 8 a.m. The winner of that match will take on second-seeded Western New Mexico at 2 p.m. while the loser will complete the season with a fifth-place match, which would be played at noon at nearby Canyon View Park.
The ThunderWolves defeated a short-handed Metro State side by a 7-2 margin in a neutral-court match two weeks ago before falling 6-3 to Western New Mexico at home last Saturday (Apr. 12).
